Just got done watching Nat Geo's Doomsday preppers, pretty interesting, although probabbly extreme.

I don't aspire to ever be as prepared as either of the above peoples, but I can sustain my family of five for a month if need be. Just for the record I am not waiting for the end of the world, however I am wary of our JIT infrastructure.
The great thing is, on my scale of things, it is not a waste of money or time, as everything can and is used/rotated perpetually. Nope no grain mills, or wind turbines here.
