Stippling Opinions
« on: February 03, 2012, 06:02:13 PM »
Anyone have any input on stippling a grip? I know how to do it and can with no problem. My question(let's see if I can word it correctly 8)) Do you guys prefer the "slash" mark stippling or the "dotted" stippling? I've been reading and from what I can tell the "slash" type is more aggressive and comfortable, if it's possible to be aggressive and comfortable.

I prefer a random texture on my grips over just a series of dots or slashes.  You can control the aggressiveness of the texture by running sand paper over it after to knock down the sharpest spots.

I have seen, handled and shot that Glock CTb1 pictured above.  It is top notch and look forward to the day I drop my Glock off with him...  I drink way too much coffee to be safe with a soldering iron.

LOL I love how in any stipple thread anywhere the first example is a Glock  8)  I like the Gen4 texture. But not what I'll be stippling. :-X

CTB: What type of tip did you use? I was leaning towards using the flat tip and doing a random pattern. Or maybe doing a random dotted pattern and going over it randomly with the flat tip....

I have to say, the stippling on that Block really looks good.

I on the other hand, would probably slot the gripframe... vertically, or course. ;D

CTB: What type of tip did you use?

I used two different types of brass screws.  One was a round head the other was a flat head.  Both screws are threaded the same as an iron tip.  On each screw I used a dremel to make a bunch of slots like a waffle pattern.

There was a lot of prep work to do before even getting into the stippling portion.  Removing material from certain areas and adding material to others to filll in low spots.  If you see a lot of DIY jobs you will notice that even under the texture you can still see the outlines of all the stuff there before - raised lines, indents, etc.  I make sure all of these things are even before starting the texture.  While this doesn't have any effect on function, it reflects on my worksmanship.  I think it's worth it for the sake of the finished product.

CTB: Would you be able to take some of the radius out of the "beaver tail"? My hands are fairly small which prevents my grip from being as high as it should be. Basically the webbing between my thumb and trigger finger slides down the curve. Don't know if that makes sense.

I haven't got involved in any grip reductions yet.  I'd have to check and see how much plastic there is to work with in that area.  The big guys in the business can do all that stuff, though.
