used revolvers in ct?
« on: March 30, 2010, 01:05:17 PM »
Hey guys, for a few months now I have been looking into revolvers and what I would like to get. I read around that I can get a used s&w for like 300 bucks, but never see anything from them for less than 400. This makes me think to look into other makers (even though I'd rather have a smith). I was looking into mainly charter arms, ruger, and taurus, even though I cannot really find any used ones for a decent price. Do you guys have any suggestions on where to look or what kind I should get? I'd rather have a .357 but maybe I will settle for a .38. Thanks for the time guys, any recommendations are appreciated.

I was in the used revolver market myself a while back.  Couldn't find any used S&W's for under $400.  Wound up buying a nice used one on Gunbroker for $410.  I'm a S&W guy when it comes to revolvers.  Any of the other brands you mentioned is a step down in my opinion.  I like a nice trigger and the S&W guns are capable of the best triggers when done right.

If I had to get one of the others, Ruger is good.  They are what they are, a sturdy gun that will always work.  Can't get the trigger as nice as I like though.  Taurus is hit or miss.  Not a fan of Charter Arms.

If you are looking for a used Smith, start here:

http://www.jgsales.com

They have a lot of law enforcement turn ins. Alot of bobbed hammer stuff. I am not sure what you want to do with the Smith but they have a lot of revolvers you can get at a very reasonable price and work on yourself to improve. I believe most of their Smith stuff is in the $230-$270 range in good to very good condition.

Hope that helps some...

Do not get a Taurus!!!!

Ruger makes a good solid revolver , today S&W triggers are not like days past. Pick up an old Smith and they are truly impressive.

My Ruger GP100 is an absolute tack driver. I highly recommend them. Used ones are not to expensive. Hell even a new one can be had for around $400 on Gunbroker. Just have to wait for the right deal to come along.

Good Luck! .357's Rule!

For the price range you mention, you can get a brand new Charter Arms, made right here in CT with a 100% lifetime warranty - and if you live in or near the Valley, customer service is virtually same day.

Four inch Target Mag Pug here: (don't worry about retail - it's less than what is posted on their site)

My next new revolver will be a Charter. I already have two.
.44 Spl Bulldog and for my wife the "Pink b*tch" .38 (yes the barrel says pink b*tch - it was supposed to be a lefty but they marked it on the right handed version, too)

Made in USA. Made in CT. Two flags waving here!

What does everyone have against taurus. My main carry piece is an ultralite taurus 85. It has been 100% reliable and very accurate.

Just curious?

Taurus makes some decent looking guns but the quality control is not there. There are too many problems with those guns to warrant spending that type of money. Plus another problem is the customer service.  I sent back a Taurus 24/7 for repair and it took 12 weeks to get it back. They take forever when you send a gun back for repair.  It is hit or miss whether go get a good reliable piece or a piece of junk that needs repair.  They do sell pretty well in stores because they start off with cheaper models and work up from there. I would rank them and entry level type gun.I believe there are far too many other guns out there to justify buying anymore Taurus pistols. Taurus also is known as a gimmick company, because they made and push the Judge Revolver, that uses 410 shotgun and 45 colt.
