sp101 vs. ?
« on: December 31, 2010, 11:23:48 AM »
I would like to get a .357/.38. It will be mainly for carry and to have something to shoot some 357 i was given. I have looked on GB and the net to answer this for myself, but still would like some opinions. Is there a better option for the money ($450 plus fees) in a snub nose revolver for these calibers. From what I have seen the sp101 seems like a sure thing. has anyone compared one to a S&W airlight 357/38?

The SP101 is very heavy compared to the S&W.I have both and the Smith is easy in the pocket.SP101 is good in a holster.

Ruger is cheaper in price. Both shoot well ;)

I would go with the 3" sp101.  The felt recoil with a .357 is not bad, and the barrell is ALMOST long enough.

Anything shorter than a 3" than don't bother with a .357.

I have a S&W 640-1 .357 in Stainless.  2.25 inch snubbie, pre-lock.

I carry it all the time in the front pocket.  I can spank the bullseye at 50 feet over and over.  Felt recoil is very manageable, and quite frankly, pleasant.

If you dont want it for carry, then longer barrel lengths would be beneficial.

It would be tough for you to go wrong with an older Smith.  They tend to hold up better in re-sale in my opinion also.

I have owned a Ruger sp101 for many years and cannot say anything bad about it.I put a Hogue mono grip on it and it is much easier on the hand with full power magnum rounds.Ruger makes a nice leather holster made for this gun.Its the most rugged snubnose I have ever owned.

I have the same grip, and it sounds like the same holster.

Having owned both at one time,I dont think either is a bad choice.....I just find them harder to carry than the smaller 380s...especially in warmer weather

The SP101 is my warm weather carry gun.  Takes a little getting used to but once you get used to it it's actually pretty nice.

I don't know about the rest of you but a full load of mags from an airline sure makes me appreciate the comfort of a full frame steel revo. For range time at least.

My .02 is if its your only revolver, go steel whether it be a smith colt or charter.
If it is a defensive only then an alloy makes sense as your senses will be the last thing you are concerned about when you lite it up.
Be Prepared, you never know when you will be in just a plain old battle of whits. Arm your mind as well.

I have been tempted to buy a light weight 380 , but after shooting my friends kel-tech I dont know if I would feel well protected with such a lite round.Im no expert but it seems that the 357 does a lot more damage to my wood backstop.

Those lightweight 380s carry real well with gym shorts or running pants, something you cant do with a 357 or a 45....
