Fun, huh?
If you can afford the 500, go for it.
Shooting stout .44 Magnums is considered wimpy, I guess, these days, but I wouldn't consider shooting more than 50 heavy magnums in one session terribly fun, albeit much more affordable than the 500.
Please note, I've never owned a 500 and my Redhawk (.44 Magnum) has also been gone for a while.

I have fired both a good deal and here's just my 2 cents on the subject!
The .500 is more than a handful and quite expensive to shoot even when hand loading. The .44 mag is much easier and less expensive to shoot and will certainly get the job done no matter what you may HAVE TO shoot at! I LOVE my Redhawk and would not trade or sell it for any amount of money. It is by far the most accurate with my hand loads and easy to shoot pistol I have in my arsenal!

thanks guys, i definately wouldnt be shooting it all the time if i did get the 500, i know the ammo is expensive... i have a desert eagle 50 already and i LOVE shooting it!  and i think it would be cool to have a 500 to go along with it...
i heard from other people that redhawks are very good guns as well...

Another option would be the S&W .460 Mag, nice thing is you can also shoot .45 colt and .454 casull's... as well as .460's.  Firing .45 colts out of my 8 3/4" barrel .460 is like plinking with a .22.  Haven't had a chance to fire any .460's yet, but the .454 weren't even that bad (other than the noise... indoor range).

I went with the .460 mainly for the ability to shoot several other less expensive rounds, but will start to reload at some point.

The .500 is one of those guns that I refuse to shoot under any circumstance.

Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I only shot a cylinderful of full strength .454 Casull, and it was more than just a handful.

Ive owned all 3 (.500, .460 and .44) at one point or another. Theyre all fun to shoot, but I think that youd enjoy the .460 the most. As SAJ said, you have 3 ammo choices and the .45lc are relatively cheap, the .454 has a nice kick and the .460 is something else. The .460 is like a slap in the face, not quite as bad as the kick in the chest of the .500 but still a hell of a round to shoot.

For the $1k that youll spend on either the .500 or .460, go with the .460 because of the options it gives you.

I also stongly encourage you to get the longer barrel, it helps ALOT with recoil.

I own the S&W 500 6.5" compensated barrel. I LOVE shooting it. best double action / single action trigger of any revolver I own. Extremely accurate. Can be shot one handed without a problem (assuming you have experience with hard kicking guns) Not for the squeamish maybe, but I have had a 14 year old shoot it as do many of my students including many females and some current members of CTguntalk, with proper training and supervision. I don't reload so it is around $3.00 per shot but so much fun it is worth it! I also own a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum also a ton of fun to shoot and much cheaper at about .60 -.80 cents per round, but no comparison to the 500!

If any one on here wants to try it meet me at High Rock some day and I will let you shoot it. Warning it is contagious! PM me!

Its a solid choice, I saw a couple on gunbroker recently, a little bit on the pricey side but still well worth it.

Feel free to contact me anytime (contact info on my website) or pm me.. Since that gun was developed as a dangerous game gun, and there are not too many elephants, rhino, cape buffalo, Grizzlies etc left in Naugatuck I bought it strictly for the fun value!  8)
