Hopkins & Allen Forehand DA
« on: October 09, 2011, 01:35:39 PM »
This is a revolver that was shown to me by someone.  It looks like it's in bad shape, lots of rust.  I could take it apart and probably clean it up, but does anyone know anything about this company?  The caliber isn't even stamped on the barrel, but based on what they made, it's a 5- shot .38 S&W (yes .38 S&W.. a black powder round)

I'll try to upload a pic later.
God created man.

Techie,
I found this! Forehand & Wadsworth operated under that name from 1871 until Wadsworth's retirement in 1890. At that time it became the Forehand Arms Company until it was bought out by Hopkins & Allen in 1902. H&A continued to manufacture the Forehand revolvers using the parts they acquired from the sale until somewhere around 1910-12 (or perhaps even a little bit later).

The manufacture of Hopkins and Allen firearms ceased in 1917 when the plant was taken over by the Marlin-Rockwell Corporation for the war time production of Browning automatic rifle components.
If it's as rusty as you say it really has no intrinsic value other than a curio! I've seen them in fairly good condition go for 75.00 or less!

Weren't they in Norwich, CT? The Saturday edition of "The Day" mentioned something about a walking tour of Norwich's firearms iindustry tomorrow at 1300 hours, IIRC.

Yes, they were....

I once traded a revolver like that for a (sort of) new 50 rd box of .357 mag ammo. I felt lucky to get something of value for it

Nifty little guns.

Not worth a whole lot, but hey. They're the only ones I can own... for now.  :)

(They're not really GREAT guns, but they're not the worst either. People just like to overstate their shortcomings.)

I happened across this while browsing...not a revolver, but it's an "H&A".

What I REALLY want is one of the old Iver Johnsons (antique, obviously) with the 6'' barrel.

They really, truly aren't bad little guns. The people who give these a bad rap are the azzholes that stuff a case with Red-Dot & expect a 100+yr. old gun to hold.

First chance I have to pick up an antique Iver (preferably .32), I will (already have the mold!).
