Colt saa 45 questions
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:53:28 PM »
My father in law has an original colt saa 45, decent shape, serial number shows manufacture date of 1907. This is a fanner gun, it has no trigger and the trigger guard has no area cut out for a trigger.  Not sure if colt made these at the factory or if this is someone's home weld job.
I searched on the net and didn't find to much on it so if anyone has any info on old colts and could give me some info, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks
Steve

I do not claim status as a Colt expert, but as far as I know the factory did not produce revolvers in this configuration, so it was undoubtedly modified by someone after purchase.

If you wish to document the original condition of the revolver, you can get a letter from Colt detailing the configuration, the date it was shipped, and the destination it was shipped to.  I believe they cost over $100 these days, but with an old SAA, it might be worth it.

I've seen these type of "Fanners' before. They were used in the early 60's for 'Quick Draw' contests when it first started as a sport! They used special holsters in a cross-draw type holster and used a peculiar draw technique that's hard to explain even when you see it yourself. Later they mandated the use of triggers for safety reasons! Guys were actually shooting themselves in the groin area. Even with wax bullets you could ruin a good sex life in a hurry!
They have evolved to a different draw technique now that's also mandated. They have two types of fast draw techniques now, 'Thumbing', Which is the type I competed in and, 'Fanning'!
Here's a link to some, pictures! Look on the left side panel for the list that has videos and basics of the game!

Before I did that, I would have a knowledgeable Colt appraiser establish the current value. I would think that a call to Colt would yield the name of someone to do that for you.

Lon is right Get it looked at ;D some older guns loose value if you try and put parts in them or refinish them..I would not want a trigger less Colt but id get it checked first :)

Might have been a fast draw show gun ?
