I went out to the range last weekend & all I've been talking about SINCE is the .44 Magnum (4 inch barrel) that I test fired @ the range & fell in L<3VE with it. :P

 >:(Everyone who I spoke to about the .44 mag told me wrong. They said the recoil is too much- and its not worth carrying. But I think they were just holding it wrong ;). I found the recoil/weight to be VERY manageble.

I'm considering picking up a (six shot) N-frame .44 Magnum (4 inch barrel), or a (seven shot) L-frame .357 Magnum (4 inch barrel). 8)

I understand those frame revolvers (both the N & L frames) are NOT small. I carry a Glock 30 (double stack .45) now during the summer, but would like to add a nice wheel gun to the collection & rotate my selection of home defense/CCW's.

Anyone carrying a 'large framed' magnum? Whats a good/recommended OWB holster?  :-\

I used to carry a Lew Horton .44 mag with a 3 incher in a custom IWB holster. It made horrendous noise and was just a bit heavy for summer wear. When I carry a revolver now it's a Smith nickeled model 19 with 3 incher in an IWB. It's just right and the weight isn't bad atall!

I have a Ruger Alaskan in .44 that is my "Vermont carry" gun. I spend alot of time in the woods up there...I want to be prepared incase I have a run in with a bear or moose. Im using this:

It does the job, I dont need anything fancy.

I shot a .44 special Charter Bulldog on Saturday. Beside the crooked front sight I enjoyed shooting it double and single action. It had a steel frame and a wood grip the gentleman said it was a "Old school" kind of gun. I thought it looked pretty and was in a caliber I had never heard of before.

It shot pretty well felt good in my hands the one problem is about 20 minutes later I found my hand throbbing. And about three rounds in as a inexperienced shooter while going double action I felt myself "Anticipating the recoil" ( Which of course fracks your aim up). I set down the gun and switched to single action. Fun to shoot I dont think I would carry unless I was shooting a cave troll.

The 44 S&W Special has been around since the 1907/08 era. It's just not one of the most widely publicized cartridges being primarily a revolver cartridge. Although it has similar capabilities (240 grains at 900 fps +) to a .45 ACP, it just escapes most attention.
Elmer Keith is credited with powering this cartridge to what became known today as the .44 Magnum (not a cartridge that is acceptable in the CA Bulldog). In todays race for the biggest-bore hand-cannons, the 44 Special (even the 44 Magnum) are considered light-weights (but go ahead...make your day...and shoot a boxfull of 44 Magnums out of even a big Redhawk and see how your hand hurts).
You might think of the 44 Special (relative to the 44 Magnum) as the equivalent of the 38 Special to the .357 Magnum. Both of the Magnum cartridges are slightly longer, more powerful loadings of the specials.
On another note, the 44 Special (and 44 magnum) are a joy to reload being so big in size and having many bullet choices to boot. These are cartridges that make great economic sense to reload as well, being relatively unavailable and pricey!
