Title: 80% Glock AR Lower.
Post by: starfox223 on April 09, 2019, 12:32:15 AM
If one were to take an 80% lower that takes Glock mags it should be legal if made into an other.

My reasoning is that it wouldn't trigger the "copy" clause since there is no AR variant that takes glock mags in ban list.

So like a polymer 80, making one of these should not require an 07/SOT.

Thoughts?

I actually just asked this question, this morning.

I believe that your FFL has to actually manufacture the rifle for it to leave his purview as a completed weapon.

I think that's the hangup with doing an 80%. - Then he has to form 1 it doesn't he?

Form 1 is for NFA.

For me, I just have to make an entry in my manufacturing log and engrave if I build a non nfa firearm. If I build a SBR or machinegun, then I file a form 2 as an 07.

I've been asked about this quite a bit - Some of the new Glock 80% frames are actually really nice.

If someone were to finish one and want it to be carry-legal...How would one go about this?

The OP is about AR lowers, not pistol frames. If you mean the latter they are perfectly legal in CT to build and carry so long as you keep the mags to 10rds. If a cop ever stops you and finds you carrying a "ghost guns," well...have fun explaining that. Nothing illegal about it, but doesn't mean some A-hole can't jam you up real good until the system finds that out.

i have a few 80% frames in 17 and 19.....

i also bought a serialized p80 g17 frame from brownells..... for less than the 80% frame.....  everything about it was 1000x better quality than their 80% frame.

now if your talking 80% glock mag ar15 lower....hmmmmmmmmm     love my new frontier and wouldnt want to mess with an 80% with so many "others" out there

My argument is that a completed glock ar lower isn't an assault weapon like a regular lower would be. At that point it would only be an assault weapon if it was turned into anything other than an "other".

80% are loers are no go unless you got a ffl manufacturer license..there are trillions of threads on this....

Plenty of' "others " in this config out there, why chance it for something that costs under a grand.....

I'm not interested in becoming a test case, especially without a $1M legal war chest.

This is not entirely true. Otherwise P80s would be illegal to make.

Again, I think we're talking two different thinks here. Thing 1 is a handgun. Thing 2 is a scary-black-rifle-look-alike-thing. Different legal categories.

You said it yourself. Ar15/308 are a no-go since they're banned by name and then the copy clause catches the rest.
They AR9 on a glock mag isn't banned by name so the copy clause does not apply.

Same idea would apply to a vz58 80% receiver or any ither non banned by name firearm.

ar9 would still be illegal to build yourself from a 80% lower.......  its based on a ar15 lower, if it was legal to do, there would be thousands of them done already here in connecticut by everyone.

WHY PUT YOUR FREEDOM IN DANGER WHEN A 9MM GLOCK AR "OTHER" CAN BE HAD FOR UNDER A GRAND....

******************  BUT HEY......................  IF YOUR CORRECT LIKE YOU SAY, BUILD IT AND POST PICS, THEN POST VIDEO OF YOU BRINGING TO MIDDLETOWN SHOWING THEM .......

Either build it, or buy an other and probe me wrong

So, here's a question.

Instead of building it yourself - Why don't you just specify a parts list to a dealer like Flatulence...Have them make you one and be GTG as a legit "other"?

Truthfully, you could probably build a pretty solid 9mm other for about $700 out the door. The dealer tacks on some $$$$ for manufacturing and taking the risk...Call it a day.

I would not want to risk it myself. But every dealer wants $400+ to build one. Its b.s that excise tax would be that high and If they let me I'd put it together myself.

So you're not willing to build it yourself but, the $400 in RISK the dealer is charging to build your other is too high?

Interesting.

You realize that liability exists with the manufacturer - IE Flatulence or the FFL07 and NOT you, right? What's that freedom worth to you?

Freedom is not free......$400 to assemble an AR is not unreasonable. You are paying for labor, and piece of mind. Remember a business spends a lot of money on licensing and insurance. By assembling your parts they are losing out on profit on those parts.

hell, half the people that assemble a complete 1 themselves do it incorrectly and have gas issues or buffer issues or band the finish up, trigger springs in backwards. i have seen so many lowers banged up at the bolt release, loosing parts, ect......

$400 for me to choose my brand parts and get a decent " other " the exact way i want it is pretty damn good. if i wasnt broke and saving my cash for my cruise in 3 weeks i would buy another....
