Thanks for the PM's guys... I called both companies that were recommended.  One didn't return a call, and the other was booking for late september.

I friend of my wife's recommended someone she used last year.  he came out, game me a quote said he could do it this week for cash.  he's licensed and insured.  small crew here today.  doing to all climbing.  no boom, no cherry pickers or bucket trucks.

He's got to be 60 feet in the air right now cutting one.

the down side, I needed 6 down, he said if I took down a few more it would be cheaper... easier to drop a few if I lost a couple others.  So we lost some mature growth trees.  Looking ok now, but concerned when winter comes and the leaves are gone the 200 yards behind me to the next house wont be as private

oh, and he was $3000 cheaper than the other guys

Yeah its not cheap to do tree work.  But the work is dangerous and you have to be skilled.

hey guys, got a couple PM's plus the post above looking for the name.

It was " Fred- The Tree Assassin"

(203)721-0903

if you call him, please let him know Joe from Cheshire gave you his name.  He's worked for someone else for a long time and just started out on his own.  He gave me a great deal and I promised to spread the word to help kickstart his business

hey guys... wanted to throw this out there in case you call the tree assassin.  he did a great job cutting our trees, and the price was right.

BUT

he disappeared without finishing the clean up.  he likes to get paid at the end of the day so he can pay his guys, My suggestion is that  you hold back enough that he wants to come finish the job.  I've called and texted and he said he's be there "tomorrow".  9 days later I still have trees all over my back yard

About 12 years ago we had a tree service (I don't remember the name) take down some large maple trees.  No bucket trucks etc.  They climbed trees like apes (not an insult).  It was amazing to watch.  I was told they are Indians, and that typically Indian tree guys are very good.  I dunno.  They were impressive.

If anyone is still looking I just had Big D's Trees out of Meriden trim back a tree from my house. No truck access so they climbed. Very young guy, but highly skilled. Ran his crew good. They did a fantastic job on the work and cleanup was spot on.  Price was great also.  Highly recommend.

That sounds like the norm for most new guys in business or gypsies who work for a company and steal their customers by undercutting their prices. Had the same thing happen with my pool guy and fence company. My suggestions to anyone is dont pay cash to anyone unless they are willing to complete the job before getting paid in full. Cash is not king anymore so pay with credit cards incase things go south and pay your credit with the cash. Get a rewards card so you can get points that equal the cash saving anyway.
