Title: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on October 30, 2016, 10:26:44 AM
Won't see many more days like today this year.
Get out to your favorite range and make some noise!

I got out yesterday and looking out my window this morning, I'd love to go right now.  Too many obligations with family though.

I just got back from 2 hours of shooting. Had the hots to try the new LaRue MBT trigger, loved it. Well worth the $125 cost of improvement over a stock mil-spec trigger. Warm and sunny out too.

Good deal.
JBear, I can't help you beyond what I've already offered. I know North Stonington is too far away.
Done recycling for today...

... well, range is now closed for today, but reloading bench is open.

Usually I shoot at a friend's house who lives in my town, just a mile or so away. It's a Saturday morning thing when the weather is tolerable, but yesterday he couldn't. If not for having gotten so spoiled by this convenience, North Stonington probably would seem closer. But the fact is, there's no place like home...

Roger that; you've got to do whatever works for you.
Keep an eye out for those pulled HST bullets; you're still welcome to come over and load some up.
NET&SS has offered them in the past (maybe "xjwalt666" will sell you some).

I hate to say this....  well not really.

I don't have to go anywhere to shoot.  I can shoot at home.  I can shoot from my kitchen.  When I want to shoot a bunch I go to my next door neighbor's place.

Sorry for showing off, but it's about the only thing I can brag about these days.

Wish I had the foresight to make a horde of steel plate targets when I worked at Boudreau's Welding...
...something on the order of the Cowboy Action figures in those videos of the past few days would work.
It would be a goof to run a close-quarter rifle drill against steel with my frangible reloads.
Anyone with a couple of steel targets is welcome to come down and set-up a few scenarios for their shooting pleasure.
.308 Winchester will not be shot closer than 10 feet, just to be safer (.223 Rem. and 7.62x39mm okay).
Currently, I can supply Sinterfire-tipped ammo in .223 Remington, .308 Winchester, 7.62x39mm and to a lesser degree 7.62x54R, .303 British and .30-06 Springfield. Ammo won't be free, but it will be comparable to any retailer's prices.
Sundays 1000-1230 are open.

I have a brand new Ares SCR and have a few setup questions before using it for the first time.
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on November 27, 2016, 09:01:11 AM
Only having handled/fired one on one occasion, I'm no authority on SCRs, but shouldn't you be good to go after installing a magazine with appropriate ammo and chambering a round?
If you are anywhere near North Stonington, come up today and have dedicated use of my 100-meter range (1000-1230 hours). Plenty of assorted .223 Remington ammo on hand.

Well, time to run a few plinkers through the K31...

Ares makes a drop-in bolt stop which makes life easier (about $40).

Didn't bother the other Swede at all.... now I have some empties to reload with some of my favorite cast bullet loads.

Yes, it has been a pretty decent week for shooting, agreed!
My water-filled can targets are now mostly ice-filled, but they still make for good reactive targets.
Looks like this weekend will be decent, too. Load 'em up!

Go for it! Even a little precip is less toxic than the byproducts of combustion, so don't let a little dampness hold you back (assuming it gets a bit crappy tomorrow).
Can't send those cans to the recycle bin before putting multiple holes in them.
Even blew off some cast bullet loads in the FR-7; really need to get those berdan primers flowing again for the foreign 7.62 brass..

That is much more colorful, I'd agree.

Perhaps you can convince the city fathers (mothers, too) in New Haven to provide you a few million-dollar grant and have it displayed adjacent to Rosa's stone table in Wooster Park...?

Oh...got a few rounds off with the K31 and some starting loads with the 9mm, 130g LTCs (want to practice up for the girly-man comps when "imahangtia" comes down with his collection of 9mm Parabellums).

Was going to go but decided with my bud to make today the first dive trip of the year, later than usual but it was a shitty spring. Nice day on the water, boring, piss-poor viability dive, but we survived and got our feet wet (ok, drysuits  so not wet but whatever...) I want to do an offshore trip this summer with a 10-20lb binary target, we shall see  :dunno:

Well, all of those .357 reloads are blown off.
Better check my Plano tackle/pistol box to make sure the barrel isn't melting through it...

If anyone needs some .357 loaded up, bring bullets and powder of choice (I've only got some mid-range powders, not magnum powders) and I'll load up the 500-600 empties I now have available.
Offer is not open-ended or everlasting!

Flag Day, 14 June 2017...

Come on down and get some trigger time. Bring me some .223 Remington brass and you can shoot all day, if interested (seems like very few are interested in shooting on this shooting forum).

Bring some soup and soda cans for reactive targets and some bug dope.

Well, you do tend to be remote in order to  have a place to shoot.
As for .40, have you grabbed those HSTs available at RMR?
https://rmrbullets.com/shop/bullets-for-reloading/bullets-for-reloading-40-10mm-15/40-10mm-180165155-gr-mixed-hst-hp-pulled/?v=7516fd43adaa
Their Father's Day Sale only applies to their own branded bullets apparently...
Coupon Code is RMRDAD for 10% off all in-stock RMR brand bullets

You beat me...I don't do shot shell. If you're up this way, we can get your .40 reloaded, but you'll have to bring brass and bullets (actually, I'm out of SP primers, too). You'd might as well bring everything, but the dies and press, and you can take back whatever you don't use for next time or for when you get started reloading metallic. I do have a few suitable powders (CFE Pistol, Longshot) on hand, but you may want something different/special.

Bring the AR, too. I have some 64g GDSP and some 50g Frangibles that should work well at 100 meters or less. Shoot my patented water-filled cans.

I just got back from shooting at the New Haven Raccoon clubs Military Style Semi-Automatic Rifle shoot.

I did poorly....

Got the rifle back from being Cerakoted last week and didnt get a chance to resighted her in....

But still had fun, and got to practice sighting in on the fly so i learned something and had fun doing it.

Looks like today will be salvageable as a range day after all...
....anyone with a .223 Remington and/or .243 Winchester is welcome, just leave behind some brass for me, please. Might as well load up some of the 50g, 62g and 64g bullets, once I acquire some .223 brass.

Other calibers are also welcome.
Would love to see a m94 and a MAS 49/56 down here.

Looks like another ideal range day.
There's a small amount of activity over at Ashaway, by the sound of it, although it's not the open Sunday breakfast Shoot.
Well, it looks like more "Quiet-22" for can tops and can-busting, as well as some more .22 LR sabot testing...

Per Ashaway calendar:

Jack & Jill Shoot 8/13
On Sunday August 13th there will be a Jack & Jill shoot at the club starting at around 8:00 a.m. More Jill's are always needed. Come on down for a fun time with a BBQ to follow. Contact Kevin Kennedy at 401-932-6110 for more info or to let him know you'll be attending so they can order food.

Monthly Open Shoots
The first and third Sunday shoots will be on 6/4 and 6/18. Breakfast will be served from 7:00-9:30, trap, skeet and five-stand will be open. Pistol and rifle ranges are not open to the public unless accompanied by a club member.

Doesn't look like anyone is interested in shooting, so I'll just stash away the 64g GDSP and 124g GDHP reloads for a sunny day and settle in for a WNBA game ...

Well, figured I'd empty out some older 7.5x55mm before it rots away....and I need some boxer-primed brass to reload.
Put the B-27 out at the big pine tree (100m) and was surprised to get all 10 shots into the scoring rings; usually I just try to get all shots onto paper. I'm no marksman, I know, but I was pleasantly surprised when I recovered the target.
Also shot some cast bullets, sabots and other jacketed into my junk mail-filled box and soup & cat food can covers. I think I'm talented enough now to hit a barn door at 101 meters!

Today was .223 AR rifle and .380 pocket shooter day for me.

.223 was mostly my reloads, but also some Winchester PDX1s.  The PDX1s are expensive, but cause a lot of damage.

Yeah I know.  I thought of leaving out that sentence, because I figured SafeActionJackson would be demanding my testing protocols.  There hasn't been a peep out of him.  Maybe he had a stroke, because not everyone is drooling over gen 5 Glocks.

Plenty decent for some rifle shooting today.
Assorted plated and cast bullets launched in the K-31.  With some recently added optics, I can actually see something at 100 meters. Yippee!
Still get a kick out of my .22LR sabots. Dang, they make clean holes in the paper!

Repeat picture, but it is some of my results today. Still shooting a bit below my aim point (middle of face), but since these bullets are being lobbed downrange, it's close enough:

Well, after a month and a half of suppressed rimfire shooting in the backyard, the itch became intolerable. I broke down and hit the range today.

I kept it simple, partially out of desire and partially due to the fact that I forgot my Glock 34.  The time was spent with my Ruger GSR and a .32-20 Marlin. The need for taller sights, cold weather and erratic groupings seemed to indicate that the old Marlin might be best dealt with another time.

The Ruger, however, acquitted itself rather well.  Decent groupings were achieved with 147gr FMJ Perfecta and 180gr SP PPU. Both seemed to perform about the same with 1.5” groups at 100 yards and iron sights.

It was a good day.

JBear,

I had a couple of boxes purchased from a Walmart in VA.  I bought that stuff over two years ago now. Seems to be good for practice. I’m not much of a Walmart shopper, I’m guessing it is hard to find now?

Seems like they get these brands (Perfecta, ZQI, etc.) and get you into the store. They are a good deal, but they are shortly gone forever. I can't say that the regular $7.76 Tula has ever treated me wrong; so cheap 9x19mm isn't worth reloading (if all you need is 115g FMJ).
Remember when they had the ZQI 7.62x51mm for $10 a box. If you stocked up, you did well...

Just shot an old box Perfecta 45acp.  It was pretty damn hot for range ammo!  Yeah, too bad Wally World does carry it anymore. My stockpile of it is dwindling.

With the holiday season finally over, I got some time to zero in the Red Dot I scored back on Black Friday. Felt good getting back to the range.

Not sure how decent the ARMA 25yd/100yd targets are for that function, but was able to get everything in the black ring after a few adjustments. I think a trip to blue trail is in order when it gets warmer.

Yeah, I was getting it at Walmart for a couple years. Not only super cheap, but hands down far and away the cleanest ammo I've ever used. Clean on fingers, clean in the gun, never a bad load in thousands of rounds. I freaking love it... now it's gone.

Shot a few thousand of the 9mm Perfecta from Walmart until it disappeared.   It was a little snappy, but never had a problem.

Seems like they went to Federal.  Been buying those.   Not as snappy as the Perfecta and haven’t had a single issue in the 2,500-3,000 I’ve shot.

Just bought a press, so I’ll be rolling my own now.

Cool. Glad to hear you are active at the reload bench and range.
Have you ever used Lil' Gun in your .357 Magnum loads (158g + above)?
I've always been intrigued by the significant drop in pressures with LG over 296, H110, etc. and the slight edge in velocity. Very little difference in .44 Magnum.
I no longer have the Redhawk, but you'll have to try my .40 S&W case-based bullets filled with shot and wax. Of course, the .44s are great for old farts like me to see and handle at the bench!

The middle cartridge is a .45 AR, of course.

JerryD: there's a gentleman over at Wat Lao Kittisilaram (Bpt) that was a Brigade Commander in the Royal Lao Army. One of these days we should meet up and visit him, if interested. Couldn't resist popping a few today with the Swiss (what a difference from what tomorrow's weather is forecast to be).
Amazing how two different loads impact the target, even at 50 yards. The lighter-powered 200g cast spitzer bullet hits about six inches below the mid-range 155g plated spitzer bullet. Well, just aim accordingly and they still hit the mark and group as well as I can manage (ie. about the size of a B27 10-ring. No sharpshooter here).

Guess I don't have any pics of rounds with the above-mentioned bullets...oh well:

Wow, I can’t believe I waited so long since late January.  I hit the range yesterday with the Glock 42 and the M1 Carbine.  Great weather yesterday.

Worked on the plate rack with the 42.  Time had taken its toll and too many plates were left standing after shots were fired.  Naturally, I need more work.

The M1 functioned well. Spent my time transitioning between targets at 10 and 25 yards.  Good practice.  The little carbine is the ban state hero.  I still need to find a good light mount for it.

Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on March 23, 2018, 10:04:19 AM
The M1 Carbine was always a hit with the bowling pins shoots in Berlin. The ARs (especially with FMJs) would pass right through the pins with just a wisp of white powder; the .30 would send them flying. The Hakim did likewise, I might add.
Heck, even the 18g plastic riot bullets in the 7.5 Swiss and 7.62 NATO knocked them over just fine. The pins were set on tiny pedestals, so you didn't need much to knock them to the ground (not like a 4' table with the pistol pin matches).

A light sprinkle with full sun made for a full rainbow while popping off a few .38s and .357s this afternoon (sorry...no pics).

Genesis 9:13-17
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

Glad to hear it.  I too, was wooed outside, rifle in hand, when the sun broke through. Fired 60-70 rounds of .22 at steel from 25 to 75 yards. As usual, the ping of bullets hitting the steel is always rewarding. The dull thud of bullets striking the back stop, not so much. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

A bit cooler than Saturday, but I hear Ashaway banging away. Breakfast is over and now the shotgunning has commenced. http://ashawaysportsmansclub.org/index.html (http://ashawaysportsmansclub.org/index.html)
I guess I'll blow off the last of the 110g Carbine bullets in my compact FR-7. Only 8.5g of Red Dot required to make for economical plinkers at 50 yards. They destroy the water or dirt-filled cans quite adequately. They'd be perfect for bowling pin shoots, too, but I doubt any clubs do rifle pin shoots anymore.
Hopefully, there are a few more boxes of these bullets remaining at the shop, so I can keep rolling some inexpensive fodder.
FWIW, these bullets do just fine in the 7.5x55mm and .30-06 and likely would suffice in .303 British, 7.62 Russian and 7.7 Jap. Perhaps not as dangerous-game getters, but for backyard trigger time, they're ideal.

Not that anybody cares, but I practiced some of those "tactical reloads" with the shotgun. Had to find some excuse to blow off all of those oddball 12 gauge shells that have been accumulating around here.

More anecdotal evidence to my point.

Private range open for informal PPC matches this afternoon or tomorrow.
Can do standard handgun COF or improvise with a rifle scenario. Cost: $1 (for B-27 targets).
I've got plenty of reduced and alternate hand loads, so you can save your exotic hunting and defence loads, if needed. How about using that .35 Remington lever with some easy-shooting 125 grain LTCs?

There's a pistol plate shoot Sunday at Pachaug Outdoor Club, too.

If you have a 22 rifle, you could probably make this dream come true with some of those CCI Quiet-22s or better yet, the Aquila rounds... just be sure of your target and backstop.

The .30 caliber (7.62x51mm and 7.5x55mm) with the 110g M1 bullets is ideal for rifle shooting here, since they are adequate for cans and paper and don't use much powder. No need to waste full-tilt loads just to blast cans and paper targets. They still make ample report, but I'm sure it's a bit lower than full-power loads.

Trap. Got a bunch of single- digit disappointments trying to "shoot well." For the last 10rds out of the 100 I came with I just decided "frickkit, I'm just gonna blast 'em as soon as they're outta the trap, "technique" be damned." 12 out of 13 in a row (I blame the hawk circling the field distracting me for the miss)! Got a bunch of looks after a bunch of 0's, 1's and 2's all day.

I guess you just can't take it too seriously.
Be safe and let 'em rip!

This fella has some good videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os8NqvNxeug (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os8NqvNxeug)

Ended up doing some casting instead of shooting; a few bullets and a bucket of wheel weights into ingots.
Day is still young, so I may blow off the cast bullets loaded this week... may do some more of those tactical reloads in the 12 gauge. Do they allow that (someone had a video regarding tactical shotgunning recently...don't know where it is now) at Greyson's?
I tend to get sore cheekbones, especially with the #4 loads. Best to shoot from the hip, I guess, when blasting at the paper silhouette targets.

Gotta love it: cast 'em & blast 'em all in the same day (all with less than 8 grains of Red Dot, too!):

Gotcha, that's pretty standard protocol at most ranges regarding shotguns, I suppose.
I try to keep my shot in the pistol pit area, so I don't shoot up into the air here; I don't have a clay launcher anyways. Most of my clay shooting is done when I visit my brother in VT. I've only done a few rounds of trap during the Meriden club Open Houses, so I'm not an avid trap shooter by any stretch.

A good piece of advice I got back in 2015 from snake eater 332:
http://www.ctguntalk.com/smf/index.php/topic,38858.msg324773.html#msg324773 (http://www.ctguntalk.com/smf/index.php/topic,38858.msg324773.html#msg324773)

"Get that shotgun stock out of your shoulder pocket and onto your outer pectoral muscle and square up to the target more.  Bigger muscle groups take the recoil better (and less painfully), which also helps in recoil management for faster follow-up shots."

Today was 12 gauge day.  Buckshot and slugs.  Paper targets and plastic gallon milk bottles filled with water.  Felt good.

No pistolas for now, because I'm still recovering from carpal tunnel surgery.  Would be too painful and possibly damaging.  I really should get a girly-man 9mm for times like this.

Bridgeport has an indoor range and a rifle club with an indoor range. Plus, East Main Street and about every other street.

I don't think the range at Bass Pro counts.

The Remington Model 12C shoots straighter than I, but I still managed to retire some recyclables.
Leaving water-filled cans makes ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, right?
Needless to say, aluminum cans are much more explosive, but I'll run out of nickels, if I shoot all the cans I pick up (fortunately, RI doesn't have a bottle bill, so those cans are target fodder).

The following isn't from a .22 LR, but from an 18g .308 projectile...

Travel a few more miles and partake in an informal PPC match. I'll only ask for a dollar for the B27 target; free if you have some to donate (I have to purchase these in small lots, too).

Yesterday afternoon was the first time I've ever run the LSWC in 9x19mm. Don't know what bullet this is exactly, but the little Millennial ate them just fine. I still favor the Lee 356-120TC profile, but it's always good to know what your firearm will digest.

Now, to blow off all of the .45 ACP and .38 Specials with the assorted cast bullets.

Went to Greyson’s plate shoot last night. Definitely humbling. A lot to take in. I was the noob holding up the line at one point. I won 1 out of 8? matches.
If anyone is planning on going,
Make sure you watch a Vid of how the game works.
Make sure you have enough ammo, 100-200 rounds.
Pay attention to when it’s your turn
I suggest bringing a full size gun
Get there early for your first time so you can hear the rules.
Be prepared to stand for a long time. I was out at 9:30pm and they had a while to go.

I think the owner was there ( larger fellow, accent, pony tail) and he was very helpful. All in all it was a good experience, I was extremely stressed at first because I was messing up left and right but I’m glad I went and met a few cool people.

Good for you; you broke the ice and will be more ready for the next match.

FWIW, the .38s are emptied... and I don't hit 100% either (even from 7 yards; same paper target as above, just slightly bigger holes)!

81 degrees and humid.  Today was Ruger day.

New Blackhawk .45 acp /.45 Colt (only .45 acp, because I don't have .45 Colt ammo yet).

Ruger MK III  .22LR

Steel plates and paper.

I went yesterday, Thurs 5/3. Had the range to myself most of the time which is great, tying to get ready for some 3-Gun matches later in the month. Another guy showed up, had a M1 Garand and a 1903 Springfield Target rifle with if I recall correctly a "Lyman sight", wow, did that look sweet.

Well, now it's official... shot off some of my favorite plinkers, 130g LRN with 7.0g Red Dot.
They go right where you put them.
Darn! Go through that powder so fast...all gone!
Granted, only 50 feet for most paper bowling pins and water-filled cans, but I'm even impressing myself!

Good for you. There does seem to be a general lack of enthusiasm among gun owners to shoot. I realize life's other priorities take precedence, but it seems like flipping firearms is the order of the day. It amazes me how many low round count firearms are up for sale.
It's like pulling teeth to get anyone enthused to pop a few rounds.

82 degrees.  Humid.  Sunny.

Today was Ruger day.  I didn't plan it that way, but while grabbing my new Ruger Blackhawk I decided to take the MKIII, 10/22, and because it was hot I didn't feel like carrying my Glock29 so I took the LCP 2.

.22LR, .380acp, .45acp, .45 Colt all on steel.  Good times.

If Ruger produces a good, plastic, double stack 10mm I can throw out almost everything else.  Ruger - producing what people want.

Oh... and I'm not talking about doing it in school or at the local restaurant!

Hahaha no, just get nervous carrying the same rounds once they've been in and out a few times. There was a time when if I went a week without shooting, I wouldn't carry the gun again until I did. Now that it's nice out I'll probably start burning through what's left of my Perfecta stockpile from when Walmart still carried it...

That happens to me with ammo, finances, and cookies.  I hate that feeling.

Targetsports has had it pretty regularly. I’ve been buying the Perfecta .308 fairly regular from them.
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on May 27, 2018, 08:55:58 AM
I realize you have favorites, but there's no other brand of 9mm that works? The Tula steel-cased runs fine by me. At $7.76 a box, it's not even worth reloading 9x19mm.
As for .308 Winchester, the MKE brand (ZQI) that WMT had for a spell at 50¢ a round wasn't bad either, was it?
I rarely by factory, so I wouldn't know. I think "imahangtia" bought all of it...
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: JBear on May 27, 2018, 11:49:41 AM
Perfect was my favorite for practice because I never had a single bad round through any of our guns with it, it was cheap and consistent, but the frosting on the cake was that it was squeaky clean. I have never run a full magazine of anything else that didn't leave my gun dirtier than 100 rounds of Perfecta. I wouldn't shoot Tul again just from the cleanup alone.

What are your +P loads? Western/Accurate seem to be the only sources for +P data.

I did see this article referring to .45 ACP loads with Ramshot Enforcer... "There is one powder that will push 230-grain bullets to near .45 Super velocities yet remain within standard .45 ACP pressure limits. That powder is Ramshot Enforcer."

Ugh....  leave it to you to want specifics.  I was shooting commercial Golden Saber +P, Underwood +P, and my maxed reloads with CFE Pistol.  So....  a combination of +P and hot homemades.  Happy now?

I don't remember the CFE Pistol loads, and I'm not gonna look 'em up.  Check the max loads for 230 grain LRN on Hogdon's website if you want exact numbers.  Mine were max or max + a littly bitty bit for extra fun.

Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on June 12, 2018, 05:21:56 PM
Commercial ammo is a good enough answer. Thanks.
I just wondered how many powder companies list +P data for .45 ACP; I know Hodgdon doesn't...
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: imahangtia on June 12, 2018, 05:26:27 PM
I don't need Hodgdon to list +P loads, because I use "max + a littly bitty bit".  I'm gonna market it as "I-Man Max + littly bitty bit super ammo".  That works for me.

That sounds like a plan. Generally, just fill with powder to the rim and level with a straight-edge. Seat the bullet and let her rip!

Oh, and be happy; most want pictures, or else "it never happened".

I went to the range yesterday. I only fired a cylinder of UMC 125 semi jacketed HP .38+P. So far I really like that ammunition. It shoots well out of my SP101 and Security Six. I need to bench it in my Ruger 77/357 and see how it does.

The rest of the range trip was entertaining my kids away from the firing line while my wife shot with her friend.  They did well. It’s nice to hear two women laughing and enjoying themselves while shooting.

My neighbor has a beautiful m77 chambered in .22 Hornet; it's just too bad he's always too busy to do any shooting. He brought it over one day to show another shooter and the rotary mag spring was bound up. Have you ever had issues with those magazines? I've only shot my brother's m77/44, which had no problems.

Any stubborn Ruger rotary magazines I have dealt with, have all been fixed by a gentle tap on a hard surface.

6/26 - Took the nephew out the range. The kid exercised excellent muzzle discipline.  All shooting done under 25 yards with an AR and the Ruger PC Carbine. He liked the lower report of the Ruger over the AR. It was only a short trip, but he got his feet wet.

7/03 - Terribly humid, but some shooting was done.  I got one upper zeroed at 100 yards with iron sights.  Started working with a scoped HBAR upper. I made some headway with it but not what I had hoped.

7/04 - It was Independence Day. Miserably hot, but it was my civic duty to at least get a few rounds off. 15 or 20 rounds of suppressed .22 on steel in the backyard. Not much, but shooting is shooting.

Shade makes for comfortable shooting, even for girly-men that wilt easily.
Plenty of assorted ammo on hand...many calibers that I don't shoot: 7.62x39mm/54mmR, .303 British, 7mm/8mm Mauser, .30 Carbine, .30-30 WCF, .30-06 Springfield, .25-06 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Win., .357 Sig, .41/.44 Magnum, etc.

Come on down. I have some odds and end LSWC that I should blow off in the .45 ACP, so we can do a friendly PPC match, if interested (or just blow up some water-filled cans for recycling).

85 degrees, sunny, no wind

Today was Colt Gold Cup and Glock 29 on steel day.  Switching back and forth between guns.

Glock makes god awful triggers!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The worst of any gun I have.  Gaston(sp?) should be slapped upside his head.

I'm very used to 10mm now, so I barely notice the recoil.  When I first started with 10mm it took some getting used to.
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?

A shooting friend had his G29 over the other week, but he usually just shoots stout .40 S&W loads out of it (he has a locker full of this fodder apparently). I guess the case stays tight against the bolt face, as it seems to function perfectly fine. He actually states that these .40 loads are punishing when fired in his G22.
He thinks these are +P+P+P+P to the ninth degree, but if they were that stout, I'd think we'd see the Glock bulge going on here...?
Well, keep shooting, in any event!

imahangtia, how low have you gone with your .45 Colt loads? I did up a few 230g LRN with 6.2g of Unique; should be under 600 fps. We'll see if they make it to the target.
What is your pet load in the 10?

I have only done 50 or 60 .45 Colt (low end specs for now).  Have not chronographed them.  Won't do much with .45 Colt for a while yet.

10mm - 180gr FMJ with 7.6 - 7.7 Hodgdon CFE Pistol powder (Hodgdon's max load is 7.6).  7.7 is giving me 1,130 - 1,170 fps

Went to Blue Trail today. Had to use up some Tula ammo that I’m not allowed to shoot indoors. What great weather! A very pleasant way to spend a Friday morning. Then I ate lunch in the snack bar. Good times.

PS- Want to add that this was only my second time there. The first time I went a couple years ago left a little to de desired. The people there were way more friendly this time around. Must be this good weather.

They're under new management, so I think they're trying really hard to make a good impression on people. I'd love for them to open the 200 yard range again. Gonna go there tomorrow and perforate some paper.

Come up to North Stonington and shoot on my private range. I've still got some .45 Colt ammo, if that's what you'll be shooting.
Probably have every other caliber you seek, too.
You can reload whatever brass you empty, as long as I have bullets on hand.

I've gone on weekends before, and it wasn't so bad because I got there really early. The pistol range was a bit crowded, but there was plenty of room on the rifle range. Just posting about it makes me want to go back. Business picked up as the day went on, but I was packing up by that point.

Well, you'll have to do it sooner rather than later; I can't say how long we'll be at this location. My wife could entertain your children in the house long enough for some trigger time, unless you have triplet infants or more.

Back to the topic at hand...

...a few rounds out of the FR-7 to put a few holes in the old toilet seats before they head to the dump.
Decapped a few of the Hirtenburger cases, even though I'm fresh out of LRB primers. Will probably size the 9mm and 45 ACPs from yesterday, but I doubt I'll reload the .45s tonight as Midsomer Murders is on soon.

I shot a round of trap and a round of skeet at blue mountain sportsman center this afternoon. I haven't shot a round of trap in close to 10 years. It felt good to knock the rust off and break some clays. After 10 or so targets it started coming back to me. Skeet was another story, if I broke 6 targets that was a lot. Had Fun learning though. Looking forward to trying again soon.

Kool!  Most forum members don't seem to want to travel more than 5 miles to go shooting...  good for you!

I took the Win 12 out and, man, those targets were falling like rain drops ( I was shooting at the rain...).

The shot really blasts the puddles, too!

Finished off a few more plated and semi-jacketed in the Swiss and then yesterdays 7.62 NATO, reloaded yesterday's .45 ACP and the previous week's 6.5 Swedish. All set for the next session.

Looks like more casting is in order to get my go to plinker bullets in 6.5mm and .30 caliber...

.32 is for the eclectic carrier who lives in a safe neighborhood.

.380 is for the common woman who has trouble finding a gun small enough to not print under her outfits, but would like something big enough to actually hurt an attacker (or for slender guys like me, who want a deep conceal backup that won't ruin the lines of their girlish figure).

Went shooting yesterday. Greyson’s was down at the time, so I trekked up to Delta Arsenal for my session. Got a few hundred through the PC Carbine. Gotta get a few more through. I read it can be picky about 115gr. Ammo, and there might be something to it. Had a number of FTE’s. It might have also been my hand placement on the magwell while shooting. After readjustment, things seemed okay, but my session and ammo was also up.

My next trip should tell me what I need to know. All in all, that rifle is a dream to shoot. And the biggest take away, was that it ate up my HD ammo no problem which is 124gr. JHP’s.

I hit the range on 8/16. It was hot and humid.

It was a quick visit.  Dispensed around 130 rounds between the Ruger PC Carbine and a Glock 19X.

The Ruger has been excellent. Over 500 rounds through it so far according to my records. No issues.

The 19X is nice. In time I will be making a post in the handgun section. A review of sorts, I suppose.

Popped some 7.62x51mm in the compact FR-7.
Since I found a partial box of pulled M1 Carbine bullets (5¢ a pop), I'll save the LRN (sized for .313" diameter) for the 7.65 Argentine and .303 British and run the jacketed round noses over some 2400. Very pleasant shooting indeed.

Expanded bullets are so pretty.

I managed to sneak a little shooting in yesterday evening. It was absolutely gorgeous out compared to the swamp weather we have had. I was working on sighting in the HBAR.  The 1:9 twist barrel seems to favor 69 grain HP ammo. I need a better rear bag for my rest. I also need to zero my POI to better correspond with the scopes reticle. There’s always something to work on...

The gun made 3/4” groups at 100 yards and held the roughly .75 moa groups out to 400 yards.  The attached picture is a 3” 4 shot group with a called flyer somewhere off the paper.  I was ecstatic. I think I really need to start reloading for this thing.

I think I really need to start reloading for this thing.

Let's start. You know where I'm at (for the time being, at least).
Bring your rifle and brass. I've got powder [IMR 4198 and BL-C(2)], and some 64g GDSP and a few others.
100-meters right outside the door.

If any of you new age shooters want to reload HSTs (when available), GDHP's, Lehigh's, Liberty's or whatever, buy some and bring them down...

This won't thrill you guys any:

Yesterday, Friday, was a good day.  80, light breeze, dry

It was LCP II day, and the 2nd test of the Deteknix Xpointer open box I got for $75.

https://www.amazon.com/Deteknix-Pin-pointer-Detector-vibration-Indication/dp/B01133741A (https://www.amazon.com/Deteknix-Pin-pointer-Detector-vibration-Indication/dp/B01133741A)

I mounted the Xpointer on the end of a very thin wall, light aluminum tube.  Works great for finding brass that is hiding in 4 - 8" of grass.

Rather than close up practice with the LCP II yesterday was longer distances.  I want to push it out to 100 feet or more for giggles.

Was able to hit all targets with my G19 and Ruger PCC, even the 100 yard steel. This on top of PCC plate night at Greysons on Wednesday. The ol' "Glock Carbine" got a good workout this week.

How many rounds a month is everyone shooting?  Between my wife and I we are about 800 rounds a month.
If I’m paying 17C a round now for 9mm. How much would I save reloading?
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?
Post by: CTSixshot on September 10, 2018, 09:53:56 PM
Simply crunch the numbers. If you've already amortized the cost of the press, dies and other gear, just add up your cost of components... roughly 10¢ for a 115g FMJ bullet, 3.5¢ for the primer, 2¢ for powder = 15.5¢, assuming your brass and labour are free. You might cut a few cents with coated bullets and bulk purchases, but it's a marginal savings at best.
Most reload for the joy of it. It's hard to rationalize it for economy purposes with 9x19mm 115g ball ammo. Wal-Mart steel-cased Tula is ~ $8 with tax.

As for round count.. how about 11 pounds of lead or roughly 590 rounds (.22, .38, .45 ACP, 9x19mm, 7.62x51 and 6.5x55mm). Today, I only spectated with two rounds (one with sand, the other just a primer) of 12g in a starter's cannon.

If I’m paying 17C a round now for 9mm. How much would I save reloading?

CTSixshot numbers are pretty good.  I save a bit more ordering in bulk so my cost per round for 9mm reloads is about 12cents/round $6/box 50.  That is using coated bullets and buying in bulk.  If you really wanted to drop your cost you could also cast your own bullets and powder coat but that is more time consuming than just reloading purchased bullets.  If you get lead for free and cast your own bullets cost goes down to $2.25/box 50 but you have other costs for furnace, molds, etc.

Reloading for calibers other than 9mm has a much bigger cost savings.  Calibers like 45 long colt can easily be 75cents per round.  Reloading saves a lot there given the purchase price.    Even 45acp which is around $15/box has a much bigger costs savings than reloading 9mm.

That said I do reload 9mm but have a dillon 650 with bullet feeder.  Easy to crank out 100 rounds in 7 minutes.  Lots of people shoot 9mm and don't bother to reload so brass is free and plentiful if you are willing to pick it up.  You can also tailor the round to your gun/shooting style from powder puff loads for newbie shooters to full house loads.

I reload 9mm and 45 acp for two reasons.  Yes it does save money but more importantly when shelf stores go bare I am able to keep shooting.  If you enjoy reloading and view it as a fun recreational activity have at it.  If it is a bother/chore/source of frustration you are better off just buying 9mm in bulk for as cheap as you can find.

If ya have the components reloading comes in handy during ammo shortages like in 2013-2015.

An inexpensive single stage press that sees daylight once every 20 years is better than no personal stockpile of ammo and empty store shelves.

It was bad, and reloading components were also scares and also expensive (unless bought in bulk, like max hazmat shipment weight of 48lbs).

Let's keep the thread on topic, start a new thread in the reloading section if you'd like to discuss the topic more.

Thanks T; what a thrill to pop a few rounds in a post-war (1964) Walther P1.
Who cares about a little drizzle?

Hey, I was shooting today!

Huge thank you to CTSixshot who is an uncommonly gracious host. It was a pleasure to finally meet you!
A perfect venue for small explosion therapy. Pop-in-law and I had a fantastic time. It meant a lot to me, and more to him. Thanks again

Even though I didn't do any shooting today, I watched plenty. Ashaway was banging away most of the day, too.
I did, however, just come up from the reloading bench where I loaded the remaining primed .40 S&W with some SF40-135 RHFPs. Another caliber that I don't shoot (but they'll find a home tomorrow)!
I'm glad you guys could make it over. Sadly, the range will be history shortly.

Sadder now that I know what will be lost. Your regular offers for people to come and shoot is a resource that will be missed.

Snow in mid September when the rest of the State is bathed in warm late summer sun?  I’ll pass.

85 degrees, no breeze, mostly sunny.

Today was AR-15 .223, and Glock 29 10mm on steel day.

With us being limited to carrying 10 rounds I don't see any point to girly-man 9mm other than competition and plinking.

Fun to shoot after not shooting for a few hot/humid/rainy weeks.

Would be so much worse if Bill and Hillary were back in the White House.

Yes, I confess... shooting girly-man .40 S&W on steel (with my neighbor's SW 40), but I can do it at 3 feet or less. Haven't missed the steel plate yet.
Since I'm too far away, I won't even offer to load up some of the SF40-135 RHFP in 10mm Auto for you.

Three feet, eh?  Real men shoot plates at 15 inches or less.

Regarding your reloads:  Delivery ain't just for Pizza Hut.

Well, deliver pizza and I'll load up some frangibles in 10mm and you can shoot the steel at point blank...

Frangibles schmangibles.  The 10mm light of freedom blast alone would nuke ya.

Come on down this afternoon and shoot some .38 Specials, .44 Magnum, .45 ACP and 7.62x51mm. If interested, you can come along to Midstate Guns in Coventry, RI and Heritage in West Warwick.

Hmmmm?  Can't be the two parts of the 230g Golden Saber, since both weigh over 265g (no dirt residue either). Shot through one gallon water-filled plastic jug, one half-gallon water-filled waxed-cardboard container and one half inch of particle board...

Yes, I shudder to think how massive the blast from your 10mm Auto loads will be. I suspect they launch nucularized-latinum at sub-light speed and vaporize armored vehicles when you come within 50 feet of the target...
Too bad there isn't any means to record the velocity of 10mm projectiles.
I'll still offer to reload some SF frangibles for the less-than-manly crowd out there (even though I'm too far away, I suspect).
Otherwise, just some plain-jane .45 ACP and 7.62x51mm launching today......come down toward darkness and we can sample some of the phosphorescent bullet base rounds (see if they'll glow in the dark!).

imahangtia: come down earlier and sample my lawn mower for a few hours.

Cloudy, 65 degrees, light breeze.

Today was .45acp day.

It could have been you, had you come down and run some .45 ACP/AR Remington Golden Sabers, Berry's Hybrid HPs and HBRNs, Saeco 68BBs or other LSWCs.
Next week it could be 6.5 Italian and Japanese...

Correction: you can shoot some 6.5 Japanese today (Friday, 28 Sep)!

You can't do that.  They are our friends now.  Crawl out of your cave.  WWII is over.

And, how do you shoot half a jap?

It's "Who's shooting today?", not "Who's shooting who/whom?"
Are you "turning Japanese" or something?

Sounds like you need some more time behind the lawnmower...

Just a few more times this year, and then no more mowing.

No shooting today.  Wet, damp, blah......
Title: Re: Who's shooting today?

Yes, it is rather gloomy, but that shouldn't stop you. Won't your 10mm "nucular" loads brighten things up sufficiently?

Even though most of the 6.5x50 Jap rounds are formed from .220 Swift cases (about the closest match for the original cases), if they chamber okay, they should provide some decent trigger time with your Arisaka. Over 70 rounds available (120g to 160g).
Come on down!
BTW, Saturday and Sunday look to be mostly sunny (according to NECN's forecast).

Well, a little load development with the LBT 200g WFNPB bullet in 10mm Auto and 40 S&W.
Shot very nicely, thank you.
Not from the range, but from the bench this evening: 6.5x52mm Carcano.
Now, to get T over with his 1914-vintage Carcano.

Some .45 ACP to make some tin cans fly.  Oh, don't want to forget the clam shell targets either...Quahogs, to some.

No shooting today, but the wife and I did a bit yesterday, thanks again to CTSixshot's hospitality. The days are numbered, not liking the number of leaves on the ground in my yard.

FWIW, a friend came over to do some shooting with his G22 Roni add-on conversion, so I blew up a plastic gallon water-filled jug backed by a small box of dirt with the Berry's Hybrid HP. It expanded similar to the .45 ACP version and stopped at the backside of the 4" box. This was yesterday, actually.

I haven't shot the 10mm Auto version, since I am afraid to create a nuclear winter.

Range is open today.
Come down and try the ARX 118 grainers in .45 ACP on steel plate, paper or tin cans.
Also have the Berry's Hybrid HPs in 9mm and .45 ACP. Bring .40 S&W brass and you can shoot these, too.
Sorry, no 10mm since they'll cause nuclear winter/fallout.

Rifles are perfectly acceptable, too.
Ample .223 Remington, 7.62x51mm, 6.5/7.7 Jap, 6.5 Carcano ammo available. Some .35 Remington.
Much has gone into storage, so most other calibers are packed up already.

After a couple of busy weeks with no shooting today I was having a hard time trying to decide which gun(s) I wanted to shoot.  I couldn't make up my mind, so I stacked firewood instead.

First world problems.  Oh well.  Maybe I'll shoot next week.

Don't worry about your cushy life too much, depending on how things go in November you may start having some nice third world problems to deal with before you know it.
