Title: If you do not like PORSCHE do not enter
Post by: imahangtia on February 11, 2017, 11:16:03 PM
It has been almost 20 years since my last rally, and about 35 years since my last rally in my Porsche 911.

These videos make me all warm and fuzzy, and the sound is music to my ears.

Finances and medical reasons don't allow me to race anymore, but the memories live on and are the best of my life.

"Racing is life.  Everything else is just waiting."

I was a mechanic many years before changing professions, I worked for Porsche in the 80's then with a gentleman name Jeremy Willis who since has passed away. Jeremy was one of the most knowledgeable people I knew in the field, amazingly he was an actor before moving to the US from England. Anyway I still have my books and specialty tools stored away, too sentimental to sell or give away.

Pretty cool! Always wanted to try that looks like lots of fun! Thing is, I would not know what the heck the navigator ( :dunno: ) would be saying. Something like how many feet before the next turn? Driving directions?  :dunno:

He's reading "pace notes" to the driver.  More or less they are a shorthand type of notes of what to expect such as the next few turns, approximate speed to take them such as flat out or slower  (usually expressed as a number), warnings about rough conditions, tarmac to gravel transitions, etc, etc.  The driver and "co-driver" (navigator) pre-run the course and develop their notes prior to a rally.

Pace notes have been used in Europe (and the rest of the world) for decades.  They were introduced here in the U.S. about 18 years ago.  I'm not a fan of pace notes for several reasons:  1.  I like rallies with a "route book" which gave you a general idea of conditions and distance to turns, but were basically blind rallies where the driver is "reading the road" while racing on it.  2.  Making pace notes costs lots of money (hotels, rental cars, extra days).  That is fine for the top guys, but too expensive for "privateers".  3. You can buy pace notes here in the U.S., but again....  I liked blind rallies much more.

There are tons of youtube videos in incar video and rather than engine noise the sound is plugged into the intercom system between the co-driver and driver.  If you're very interested probably searching for pace notes and rally would give you lots of results.

Rally is cool, but I miss the Killer B's..... nothing today compares to rally racing in the early, mid, late 80's.

Tough to watch the current WRC style of racing after watching the pinnacle of the sport.  Only sport that the fans are probably as crazy as the drivers.

Group B was wonderful, but deadly for teams and spectators.

BTW:  We rally drivers do NOT shoot 9mm

It truly was brutal for the drivers and fans, and sadly that brought upon the its end  >:(

One of the vendors at work over heard me talking about F1 with another co-worker, when our conversation ended he mentioned that he followed F1 also.  I told him that I only follow WRC and F1 now (and WRC television schedule sucks), and that I really missed the Group B days.  He pulled out his phone and shows me a picture of a yellow and white Audio S1...... that he has at home.  I almost sh!t a brick, who has a 800hp rally car kicking around these days?

Rally drivers back then didn't need guns, they drove cars that were literally weapons of mass destruction.

In that first vid is that Porsche's PDK trans or is that a custom trans?

<---C4S Cab with a Turbo S on order, however strongly considering dropping the TS for the new Panamera Turbo. Had a 12 and loved it but the new one is  Favorite cars ever.

I don't know.  I haven't kept up with cars for decades, and had to google "PDK transmission".  Sorry.

It's a handbrake lever.  Rather than lying sideways it it easier/faster to reach like you see it.

I don't know what they are like now, but back when I was racing there were two master cylinders on the brake pedal.  There was a knob on the dash leading to a cable to the brake pedal so drivers could adjust the brake bias (front to rear) to suit the road conditions.  Additionally there was often a master cylinder attached to the bottom of that lever you see that you could instantly apply the rear brakes.

This happens very fast:  press clutch to disengage engine and not stall it, flick steering wheel to get car loose, pull the handbrake to lock up rear brakes.  The result is the tail of the car flips around and you can turn very fast around a hairpin or other very tight turn.  It takes practice, but once you get it right it feels wonderful.

You don't have to have the fancy master cylinder on the handbrake to do it.  If you have a cable handbrake take your car to a slippery parking lot (make sure no other cars or light poles etc).  Drive, depress clutch, flick wheel, pull up handbrake (KEEP THUMB ON BUTTON), release handle and enjoy the orgasm of having your car spin around.

Now....  the newer cars like in the video might have some electronic method to disengage the clutch.  I've been out of this for many years and am not familiar with them anymore.

Edit to add:  if you flip your mom's minivan, your raised pickup truck, etc don't complain to me or a lawyer.

Where did you see that?

Did the number sticker (or another sticker) indicate the sanctioning body?

It kinda looks like it might be an autocross car.

It looked like it may have been on autocross but some of the yellow pen marks along the rear indicated it may have been an insurance loss. It was coming from either long Island or queens NY to the possibly the towing company in the Bronx NY.
