What are stage 1, 2, etc modifications
« on: September 10, 2019, 11:24:30 AM »

For several decades I've been out of building race cars and performance modifications.  I haven't read car magazines either for 30+ years.

Some youtube car video people mention "stage 1" "stage 2" etc modifications.  What does that mean?

I have a stage 2 on my current 911. I gained over 100 HP and TQ with a full exhaust and tune from Fabspeed plus the subtracted weight. It is pointless to buy the 911 Turbo now, you can get a S and tune it for 60K less.

Easiest way to think about it is:

Stage 1: Bolt on

Stage 2: Bolting on significantly more shit. Replacing the Cams, modifying your gearbox/clutch...

Stage 3: The turbo's in your kitchen sink.

I helped a friend rebuild a Skyline back in 07/08 - He went full rere...Knew NOTHING about cars at that point, was most definitely a trial by fire.

Stage 2 is the max on a lot of cars out there right now - Between governors and some of the new transmissions now, some newer engines just don't see any real benefit from Stage 2 -> Stage 3.

“Stage” is a marketing term in the aftermarket.

I'm beginning to see that.

Guess I'll plaster some stickers on my car and call it a "stage 4" upgrade.

Stickers are stage 1, fart can muffler is stage 2, big ass useless bolt on wing is stage 3, and adding in race seats and harnesses, but no roll bar = stage 4
