Anyone ever see .223 PDX1 lately?
« on: August 11, 2019, 09:20:24 PM »

I have some .223 Winchester PDX1 I bought several years ago for defense ammo, but I'm running low.  WallyWorld doesn't carry it anymore, and I don't see it anywhere else.  Anyone know what is going on with this ammo?

What other stuff is good defense ammo? (preferably nickel plated).  Not looking for super exotic or copper type... Just something well suited for up close and personal defense in my home.

To my knowledge, Winchester hasn't done PDX in a long time.

Most major ammunition manufacturers, do one run of defensive ammo a year and trickle it to distributors all year.

It requires special brass, special primers, different powders and special bullets so, it's a one and done sort of thing.

Quite frankly, if you're in the market for 5.56 defensive ammo, I can just make you some.

If we're being honest, I could probably get you the same velocity and expansion from a triple shock for the same price per round.

That's really all your defensive bullets are - A triple shock or whoever's version with a polymer tip.

If you'd rather get something off the shelf - Hornady's 223 does a good job.

Don't laugh at these as a home defense round.  Full energy dump in the target, less chance of pass through.  I've seen coyotes literally explode with these rounds.  3600 fps is screaming!  Available and reasonably priced at your local Walmart.

That's all defense rounds actually are.

They take varmint rounds, put a polymer tip in and sell you "special defense rounds".

You can literally do the same with Triple Shock or Lehighs and call it a day.

Lipstick on a pig no matter how you shake that tree.
