Whats everyone's go to competition ammo?
« on: June 07, 2019, 08:53:33 AM »

Hey guys, Just wanted to hear what different people run in competitions. I started shooting in USPSA about a year ago and see all sorts of different ammo being used. I know a lot of people reload but that's not something i'm looking to get into (yet). What works for you?

What caliber? When I shot IPSIC in the early 90s I shot a stock 1911 .45ACP with 185 gr semi wad cutters. The idea was to reduce the recoil for faster follow up shots. Those who were in it to win it shot 38 super. Others shot 9mm but I am not sure what loads were used.

You might as well jump on the reloading band wagon. It will save you a ton of money. I was shooting 200 rounds a week just to practice for a weekend match. I was hanging out with the original owners of Wolfs in Bristol. We went to a match almost every weekend.

I reload and I use whatever bullet/powder combo that I have on hand usually. That said, I'm not shooting any matches that require specific power factors and such like.
To be honest, I am not a serious competitor and participate more for the fun of shooting, not necessarily to seek a trophy. If you are going for the prize, I would think any reliably feeding bullet profile that hits to point of aim would suffice. For PF, you'll have to run any purchased ammo over the chrony to see if it meets specs, before purchasing it in bulk.
On a practical note, I've used 95g FMJ .380 bullets atop .38 Special rounds and knocked down pepper-poppers and plates just fine, as long as you don't hit at the absolute bottom hinge area.
Needless to say, if you're in a revolver match and require speedy reloads, I wouldn't buy a case of wadcutters, as they won't drop into your cylinder very smoothly. Round nose or TC bullets work well for this.
As long as the ammo meets your PF, if required, I'd think basic Wal-Mart fodder will suffice for the time being.

For IDPA I reload The Blue Bullet 9mm .355 dia 147 grains with 4.0 grains of Power Pistol.

For factory I’ll use American Eagle 147 grain flat point  9mm.

Sorry-i should have been more specific. I'm shooting 9mm factory ammo in the open class with a Glock 34/RMR combo.

Back in the early-mid 90's when I was shooting IPSC almost every week I was buying reloaded ammo from a local company (long since out of business).  I was shooting about 500-1,000 rounds per week, so I eventually started reloading my own to just make the power factor bullshit, be a bit more mellow on my gun, and to save money.

Perhaps to start you can find someone who reloads who will make up ammo you want for competition.
