But it will be like teaching a pig to sing, a waste of your time, and you'll only succeed in anoying the pig.

Suppressed rimfire guns are the absolute best thing for new shooters.  Hardly any sound at all, absolutely no recoil, it really is the best ice breaker.

Of course, Lovell’s attitude is hard to beat.  When I’m teaching somebody new I tend to be a tad dry.

Is it just me or does everything come with a threaded barrel now?

Except in the people's republic of CT?
You can never have enough friends, horsepower, or ammunition.

I suppose you’re talking about pistols with threaded barrels?  Just buy a used, made before 1994 Browning Buckmark or Ruger MK II and get it threaded.  You can actually just buy a threaded barrel for the Browning.  The Ruger will need some ‘smithing.

I'll no longer shoot a proper rifle on the first day with a new shooter, especially indoors where the sound/blast can be a little intimidating.  Start with the Ruger Mark, usually with a can, and then work up through a proper 9mm pistol (usually the 9mm Range Officer - lots of weight it eat recoil) and eventually a 9mm carbine.

To all in the thread: why not a 22 rifle before a pistol? even lower recoil, easier to hit something with it and be encouraged, easier to maintain muzzle awareness, less intimidating to some than a handgun.

Because I’m usually at an indoor range where one can’t go prone, or even kneel.
