Waterbury wreath bedecked with guns and handcuffs draws parental concerns
BY ANDREW LARSON REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
December 5, 2018

WATERBURY – ‘Tis the season to be jolly, but a Christmas wreath on Bunker Hill Avenue decked with guns and handcuffs has some parents concerned.

A wreath decorated with gold-colored handguns and shackles was placed amid a row of handmade ring-shaped assortments of cheer on a fence at Schofield Park.

The creations were entered into the Bunker Hill Neighborhood Association’s wreath contest this year.

Some residents view the display as a symbol of pride and safety. Bunker Hill has an active neighborhood watch program.

Residents Wednesday said they’re concerned about crime at night, including frequent break-ins of parked vehicles.

At Bunker Hill Pharmacy, there were so many thefts of cigarette cartons that the store decided to stop carrying them. The business is outfitted with state-of-the-art video surveillance now.

Residents began noticing the nonconforming wreath on Tuesday.

One of them was Kim Randalot, who lives in Oakville and has two children, ages 3 and 7. She said the sight of guns elicits anxiety in some children.

“I love the idea of wreaths and I love the idea of a block watch, but if it makes one child feel anxious, it just seems there are more effective ways of keeping the neighborhood safe,” Randalot said.

As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the wreath remained on display. Its creator remains a mystery.

The only way guns elicit anxiety in a kid of 3 to 7 is if parents made them that way they aren't born like that.

What a perfect time for her to teach her children about firearms to demystify them and remove their (and her) anxiety over an inanimate object.
Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Actually now that I think about it many people in Waterbury are probably more fearful of the handcuffs.

Paternity tests.     Handcuffs are a badge of honor there.
