I assumed I could build and own say, a 1911 without a number, but assumed I couldn't carry it legally. I'm not sure why.

you can, but it falls under the "if you're pulled over and a cop finds it on you, what are they going to think about that?" rubric.

Well, if it's legal, I'm more concerned with what my lawyer thinks that they think about it.

But does the cop who pulls you over know it's legal? Or the DA? How much legal process are you willing to pay for to educate them? And after they pull your permit and seize all your stuff? I'm sure your lawyer will love to (charge you to) help you get it all back.

My family has at least three on retainer. Not for this, mind you, but I will not be without one if SHTF. There are a lot of legal things I am not willing to do because of the legal risks of exercising my "rights", but this particular hill I just might be willing to die on in the right circumstances.

I agree, good for you.  Sadly I am definitely not in that situation and as a result would not be willing to pick this as my battle to fight.

Ran into a guy today that said he knew the guy involved, from what he told me it was a good shoot.  That said, I'd still lawyer up.
