Frontier plated 155g Spire Points....
« on: September 09, 2018, 08:01:52 AM »

Seems to be the only bullet that leaves swirls on the target. Fired from FR-7 with 20.0g 2400. The sole recovered bullet does not have any breaching in the plating. Could the swirls be lead residue being scrubbed from the bore (I do predominately shoot cast bullets in my rifles)?  Can't say I've noticed this with Berry's or X-Treme plated bullets.
The unswirled holes are from 110g FMJ and/or 130g LRNs

Wonder if you got a lead paint test kit and test sections of the swirls furthest from the impact holes :dunno:

Isn't  swirl marks a sign the bullet is breaking up.  How fast are you pushing these bullets?

I had this happen once when I wasn't flaring the case enough.  I was shaving the plating off.

Don't have a chrony any longer. All of these bullets are gone, so I can't try lesser charges, but I doubt 20.0 grains of 2400 is launching them that fast, based on the mild recoil and all. I'll try to recover some more bullets from the berm and see what they look like.

Well, I didn't see any bullets easily recoverable in the backstop, but I did fire some plain-base LRN bullets with 20.5g of 2400. No swirling designs on the paper at all.
