Vortex Spitfire AR 1x
« on: May 14, 2018, 01:56:50 PM »

Does anyone have experience with this optic?
I'm thinking of plunking one down on top of a Ruger PC Carbine, if I can ever get ahold of one, as I am not much good with iron sights. Seems from the reviews like a good solid choice for around $200. I don't want to cheap-out, but don't want to plunk down $400 or $500 either for an optic for a gun that will be (mostly) a range toy. Unless, of course, the zombies attack.

In your case I would suggest going with something that will sit as close to the rail as possible. The integrated rail on the ruger PC sits quite high, with the spitfire ar you will be lucky to get a chin weld on the stock.

If you want to stick with vortex I would look at their venom red dot.

Actually, with my glasses I am much more comfortable shooting head up. I have a heck of time shooting with the scope mounted low to the bore. I'd probably have to put a riser under the Venom. Though I am thinking of trying one on my FNS40c.

if you are ok with your head position using the irons, the venom should be close enough. I have shot someones pc with one of those nc star type open reflex sights and it was too tall for my liking. I had an inconsistent chin weld - 10 rounds was enough.

I checked that out. I like the reticle, and the optic seems to have favorable reviews. But like other red-dots, I'm afraid it will look fuzzy since I have pretty wicked astigmatism. I am hoping the etched reticle in the Spitfire will be clear. I don't have a problem with traditional scopes & reticles.

But that Holoson would be one to try if I don't like the Vortex.

Well, the Carbine and the Spitfire arrived and the latter is firmly mounted atop the former. I like both, though that 3 moa center dot is damn hard to see under some lighting conditions. Rest of the reticle is nice and clear under all conditions. Really like the red/green/black option on the Spitfire. And no "fuzzy" dot.

Given that I'm not looking to shoot .5" 100 yard groups with this combo, I'm not concerned about "sometimes there, sometimes gone" center dot.  Target in the center of the inner ring should be just dandy out to about 75 yards, but I'll know for sure once I get it out the range next week.

And as for that 3moa size dot. Yeah, right. I'm thinking of putting a Venom on my FN .40 cal. If I do,  I'm definitely going with the 6 MOA dot.

Anyone know of any other small red-dots with a 6 or even an 8 moa dot for <25 yard targets with a pistol?

The etched reticle on the Spitfire is good for those of us with astigmatism.

Primary Arms is coming out with a 1x prism optic with the acss reticle called the Cyclops. Should be for sale in August, I'm looking to get either that or the vortex prism

I've picked up a few Primary Arms scopes over the last year or so. Very happy with them so far.
