Have the airlines started to mention any of this?
Not sure. Seems the airlines may just link to the TSA website and leave it up to passengers to figure it out. For example American Airlines just links to TSA:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login links to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Not obvious on that TSA page that starting Jan 22, 2018 the ID requirements change. There is mention of the change under Travel > Security Screening > Identification.

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

About mid way down that page is this bit:

"ID requirements at the checkpoint will change beginning Jan. 22, 2018. Learn about You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login, read the You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login or You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login."

It's going to be a mess with lots of angry people no matter what. Even today you still see people shocked that they cannot bring their bottled water or soda through security screening. Gets annoying to get stuck behind a bunch of millennials who whine about not being able to bring their water/soda/coffee through the checkpoint or not having liquids in a quart sized bag.

Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

I renewed my license in Aug 2016 IIRC, I don't think it was in 2017. I went to the Avon AAA with the papers the Gestapo required and my SS card was from the 50's and not attached to anything! I was out in about 10 minutes. I figured that while I'd rather die than fly I might need to escape from this socialist shit hole and flying would be easier so I opted for the verified vs regular license. IIRC to do this in the future was expensive so it just made sense to do it then.
I love CT. I've lived here my entire life, it's all the socialists and libtards that I hate.

Followup:

I did return with a W2 with my SSN on it.  I asked about my SS card and why they would not accept it
( different clerk). She told me it had no stamp but what was attached to it previously did.  I say Bullshit but I wasn't going to go to the DMV and take my chances with how busy they might or might not be.
