Ginseng??
« on: September 05, 2017, 08:50:02 PM »

Went out for the first time this morning, hoping to bust the cherry on my savage 24.  No squirrels but I spotted these two plants and think they might be ginseng.

I've only seen pictures.  I left them where they were but thought it was neat.

The top pic had the leaves stripped off. The bottoms pic was quite large. The plant was about 2ft across .

Found some sweet tree frogs, super tiny, like the size of your pinkie nail.  And a wood frog.

You might send the  pics to someone from the CT Agricultural Station.  They should be able to give you a positive ID.

The one tell tale for Ginseng I use besides five leaves, is the leave group have a good bit of stem (forget proper name) to each individual leaf. I have a lot of virginia creeper on my mountains here in E KY, very little ginseng.

The top picture is Jack in the Pulpit, but the bottom one is not, assuming those leaves are attached to the seed clump.  I have a ton of them in my yard.

I can't tell the difference between safe plants or poisonous plants.  I guess I'm toast if the SHTF.

It's been a fun side hobby of mine for a few years now.  Started with a few books I got for fathers day., plus it gets me outside.  And you'd be amazed how much delicious plant life grows around us.

Start with one plant. Id it 100%   then go to the next .   If you can spot the difference between an apple, an orange and a asparagus you can id wild edibles.

Knowledge can never be taken from you.

The bottom pic is all one plant except for the poison Ivy in the corner.

I read a few sights that said while rare, ginseng may have three or four leaves.
