Moving to CT!
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:51:39 PM »
At the end of this year I will be leaving Active Duty Army (Military Police) and moving my family to my wife's home state of Connecticut and pursuing a career in civilian law enforcement.

I have grown up in Florida, and currently stationed in Louisiana where we have very relaxed gun laws.

But just from doing my proper research on CT gun laws, I'm starting to cringe at knowing I wont be able to have a AR-15 with a adjustable stock.

Looking deeper into CT firearm fourms im reading about looong waits for carry permits, and even seeing that the gun haters tried to take away your "High Capacity" magazines last year.

My questions are does CT look like it will be headed in the right direction to have better gun laws such as a better Castle (home defense) laws, or does it look like CT with follow its neighbors with harsh gun laws such found in New York and Mass?

First, thank you for your service and I wish you and your family well in your move to Connecticut.

The last couple of years have shown a profound resistance to any newly-proposed crappy gun laws in CT, and I personally don't think there's much appetite for more at this point.  On the other hand, it's really difficult and improbable that the current laws (like CT's AWB, or the poor definitions of firearm, pistol, and rifle) will be changed for the better anytime soon.

You can have a fully configured AR (collapsible stock, bayonet lug, flash suppressor, etc.) as long as you have a preban lower, so don't worry too much.

Be prepared for a great deal of culture shock moving here from the South.  The liberal North East is known for it's anti-gun climate, high cost of living, PC, and overcrowding; and CT leads that charge!

While the magazine ban you mentioned was defeated, you will find that most of the city and state governments are not your friend as a gun owner. Go slowly and carefully when it comes to guns here.  Things you take for granted as a gun owner down south will get you arrested in a heart-beat in the Un-Constitutional State.

Again thank you for your service and for your desire to serve in law enforcemant. Maybe I am a little more optimistic than some, but I am a life long CT resident (with the exception of my military time) and I am a long time gun owner. CT is no where near as bad as some states. A huge percentage of people who apply for a carry permit in CT. are approved regardless of a few anti-gun towns. As mentioned above your AR will have to have preban lower to be legal with an adjustable stock, or you can have your stock pinned. I own pretty much every type of handgun and long gun I could wish for and have no trouble surviving in CT. You could do much worse than living here.

Indeed.  In the last few months that I've lived in hillbilly land there's not anything that I've bought or wanted that I couldn't own in Connecticut.  NY/NJ/MA are a whole different story.

On the other hand, in CT, it's frowned upon to come to a family reunion looking for a date, so I guess that's been a plus...

IIRC you CAN marry your second or third cousin in CT... I'll have to look it up.  :-\

Nonsense.  In lib states, it's only frowned upon when the date is of the opposite sex.   :P

I've been a a ct resident for all but 6years of my life. My wife the same.

The biggest concern we have is the instant felon.

Go just a block west or north, cross into mass or ny with a 30rd mag and you could face some problems.

That's just a small example.

Plus side is we have A LOT of money in the state so it seems a bit softer of a economic hit in the reccession. Of course id probably think different if I was out of work.

When we can afford to move I believe we will move to a state that is more in line with our own views and easier on the wallet.
