Blunderbus
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:53:00 AM »
Got an interesting customer request for an 'anti-pirate' gun.  Basically, a muzzle loading black powder pistol shotgun with a 2 inch bore...    ::)

Anybody got any info as to the legality of this thing?  It's bigger than a 40mm grenade launcher!   :-\

I assumed it would fall under NFA SBS or DD rules but for the 'black powder' and 'muzzle loading' parts, and what I could find of CT statues regarding these were less than enlightening.

So, is a muzzle loading black powder blunderbus legal in CT, and if so, does it require NFA paperwork?

Good question. These things can pretty much fire anything. Perfect old-school SHTF weapon if you can't find ammo.  8)

By definition, "front-stuffers" are not firearms under federal law.  Even with a 2" bore, it's still just a muzzle-loader.

We HAVE to see video of this thing being shot!!!!

That's what I thought as well, but seem to recall there were a few black powder front stuffers that the ATF reclassified as AOW, which requires permitting, $200 make and $5 transfer taxes.  However, after further reading, these were originally firearms that were converted into muzzle loaders, and the ATF ruled them as firearms as it was relatively easy to swap out the barrel and other parts while retaining the receiver.

To be on the safe side, sending a letter to the ATF for a ruling.

So it would be legal if I sell it to him with an Xbox and call it a 'game controller'?   :P

I don't even know what that looks like.  Can you link a pic?

I was going to design it based around an oversized rail mount m203 (with quick detach) and use an off-the-shelf railed stock and pistol grip.  It would use piezoelectric ignition.  Like what some black powder (and gas stoves) use.  No need to mess with primers.

The quick detach is so he can use a spare for rapid 'reload'.   8)

Depending on how it goes, legal and practical test wise, it also brings up the interesting option of having the equivalent of a single-shot 'grenade launcher' mounted under an AR that looks like it belongs there.  Though of course it doesn't launch grenades, but a hundred or so ball bearings for devastating close range work.  Possibly against multiple targets across a room as a 'clearing' option, as it were.   :P

For that product, it would make sense to follow the 40mm bore diameter of a standard m203 with the same 'look and feel'.

Google blunderbuss; the first hit shows several photos.

Successfully tested prototype under-barrel blunderbus 'accessory'.  :)

Basically a 3-gauge black powder shotgun firing 3 ounces of steel BBs, that looks and is operated like an M203 grenade launcher.  Was debating whether to try launching a single massive inert metal projectile, but couldn't think of a practical use for it.  Besides, bagging a badguy by 'shotgun' seems rather less problematic to defend than one that's been bagged by a 'grenade launcher'.

Just a fun piece of lunacy.  Needs more refinement, before considering selling it.  :)
