i have owned 2 ford rangers 4.0 liter, an 04 and an 06, loved them both. 5 speed is my preference. they are great little trucks. i had a 97 saturn sc2 that i beat the ever loving snot out of for 2 years without a single major problem, also a 5 speed. i had a 99 explorer, not a bad car also. my current beater is a 96 jeep cherokee with a 5 speed and the 4.0 straight 6. mine is lifted 5" with 33" tires and gets 16-18mpg. the autos get that stock.

i personally cant bring myself to buy jap junk, and hondas and toyotas are wayyyy over priced because everybody thinks they are so great. civics with 250k on them sell for $4000, give me a break.

LOL Jap junk?  Fords make me a paycheck every week as do GMs and Jeeps  8) If you work on cars and trucks for a living you know what to expect as far as whats goin to break or fall apart and whats goin to last for longer than your bank loan on the pile is..... Sorry to say but id go jap anyday before any american car or truck companys.
If your looking for cheap you may have to buy American  :( They dont hold there value and are way lower in price just be ready to throw money at them..

I gotta say, both of you are right in certain aspects.

American cars are cheap because... well... NOBODY wants an American car anymore. Everybody wants to be a hipster. Everybody wants to be the nouveau riche.

Japanese cars are expensive, for the sole fact that the market demands it... people start adding hype to the car's reputation, and the prices skyrocket. Some of them are good, a lot are total crap owned by enthusiastic 16yr. olds.

I worked in a garage for awhile... we had a lot of foreign vehicles come in for the same problems over & over. There was one Subaru that liked to eat head gaskets.  >:(

Subaru's gaskets were complete shit on the 1st gen EJ25 (2.5L) motors.  If you bought one back then, it wasn't a question of if....it's when will the head gasket blow.  But there was a recall and the majority of them were upgraded to a stronger gasket design.  Even the second gen EJ's were having problems, though not nearly as serious or as widespread as the 1st-gen.  Subaru's solution was to use a coolant additive...which was really nothing more than a band-aid.

If you were really looking for a cheap, reliable Subie, either grill the owner on this sort of stuff (water pump, head gasket, etc.) or try to find an old 2.2L Impreza.  Hard to come by, but relatively bulletproof.

What kills me is the European car obsession, especially German cars.  Apparently all it takes is a squishy-soft dashboard to convince people that it's a quality car....and let me tell you, 4 German cars later, I have no desire to own another one.  Ludicrous build quality (built like they never have to come apart again, yet they do....A LOT), high parts costs, tough serviceability, and generally shitty reliability.  No thanks.

The Jap cars may be a little thinner on the sheetmetal, a little tinny here & there, but most of them will last forever.  Whether the price premium is worth it is up to the buyer.

Yep its not if it is when with them. Diagnosing them was easy though take off radiator cap start car watch coolant shoot 3 feet in the air. Never had one that was slightly leaking the just blew

I gotta say though that the Japanese make a pretty damn dependable vehicle... but then again... I like surviving collisions... with plus sized vehicles...

I'll keep my CVPI, thank you very much.  ;)

Hey guys, I've owned my 1999 olds alero since 06 when I bought it for $3k with 115k miles on it. This was my first car and bought it based on looks mainly. As of this week it has 189k miles on it, and with the way it runs, makes me think I may be in need of a new car soon.
What is wrong with your Alero?
Any chance it just needs some maintenance?

all I can say is i will NEVER have another jap crap in my yard again. I dont care if I have to start driving the old chevelle everyday. our 2004 altima with a 3.5 has been nothing short of a total piece o' crap this year.  it is just a cheap plastic car .

and I'll be damned when the day comes for us to get another truck if it'll be a jap truck. you buy a chevy or GMC and they last. I dont haul Rice so they can keep the plastic trucks.

never had any issues with our 01 chevy.

I always wondered why Toyota never brought in their world famous Hi-Lux diesels into the US.  They're the compact trucks you always see in war torn countries with a belt fed bolted onto the bed, or hauling a dozen armed men in desperate need of a bath.   8)

Seriously though, nothing beats a full sized US made diesel truck when it comes to heavy duty hauling.
