Loud Pipe Ticket
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:08:32 AM »
It was on a bike, and I know this is a car forum, but does anyone have any advice on how to beat this $225 ticket?

Did the cop use his decibel meter to see how loud it actually was?

I thought bikes were exempt from noise ordinances? ::)

Every Harley on the planet is louder than hell. How loud was your bike for god's sake!?!?

It is because of the bikes that the noise ordinance is written and enforced the way it is in West Haven.

Yeah... I was about to say that if YOUR bike is louder than my NEIGHBOR'S bike...

You'd be deaf instantly.  ;)

The way I'd go about it, is bring it to court. Contest it & see where it goes from there. There is NO guarantee you are going to get out of it though, just a heads up.

No meter, it was on 84, I was doing about 75 and he was just wrapping up ticketing someone else.

But yes theyre loud, straight pipes, no clue how bad as I dont own a meter. The wind noise is louder than the pipes at that speed.

I would assume you need a meter to hand out a ticket.

I would plead not guilty on the ticket. Got caught speeding a few months back. I was following about 10 car lengths behind the state trooper, then he decided to pull over quikly, slow down, let everyone pass and then pulled me over for doing 70. Plead not guilty to the ticket and they threw it out since there was no rader/laser to prove how fast I was going. Only got as far as receiving letters from the court that the case had been dismissed, never even made it to court! 8)

So in your case I would plead not guilty. Just because in his opinion it was "loud" he did not use a meter to prove it. If anything they might make you go through an inspection through the DMV. In that case just throw your stock pipes on for the inspection, then swap em back out again.

That was going to be my plan, I have the stock black bazooka to put back on to get tested which is whisper quiet. I thought the cop might show up with some note that I had chrome pipes but then again I doubt hed even show for something like this.

On another note I was carrying concealed and elected to not volunteer that info to him. From the second he got out of the car till he was down the road he was a ball breaking SOB. I didnt have my most recent registration on me and I got the impression that towing my bike would have made his day.

At the end of the day, this is all my fault for not immediately putting the new reg under my seat and deciding to go with loud pipes. I agree if youre being a loud ahole in a residential area you should get a ticket, I do my best keep it quiet where its possible.

I also know that when I was taking a trip to the hospital for getting rear ended by some woman who "didnt see me" waiting to turn into my driveway or the other dozen people that ran me off the road or merged into my lane on a whim, Mr. State Trooper was no where to be seen. Mind you all of these happened with "quiet" pipes. Until I get a db meter or some other qualifed guidance from the law Ill continue to be loud yet safer.

How about just paying it? You seem to know they where loud and probably over the legal limit.  You got caught... man up.

As a fellow rider of 25 years let me say thanks in advance for contributing to the aftermarket pipe ban that was a pubic hair width away from passing about 5 years ago.  Just as I warned about how they are really cracking down on loud pipes in a different thread about 6 months ago.... let me warn you... that bill will be back.

Loud is one thing but some bikes out there are as loud as a jet fighter on take off. You can hear them miles away and they rattle your fillings when they pass. I guess they like to get noticed..... and getting noticed they are.

I have to agree with both sides here, yours, & banshee's.

There is a purpose for a bike being somewhat noisy. It DOES grab attention, and probably saves Harley riders from being pancaked by a careless driver.

But there are some bikes out there that are so goddamn loud that just have no... real purpose. They're WAY louder than what is just reasonable to the health of your ears.
