Well greg, back in the late 80's there were a lot of guys around milford who thought the same way.....

Don't get me wrong, the 390 is a perfectly OK engine... but my stepdaddy used to race at old Riverside, Stafford, etc. Good bottom end torque, but didn't have enough to keep up even with the 327 & 350 powered Camaros. The 289 & 302's he had actually did better (and held up a LOT longer!). It's frustrating to be in third on the last two laps & snap the crank clean off on the journals. ;D

I like the 289's. You can rev the living crap out of them, and they don't pay any mind to it. A neat thing some people have done to them, is de-stroke them using a crank with a shorter throw (and a few other things obviously) down to 260 or so, and then wind them up to 14,000rpm+. Stock bottom ends  8)

I wanted to go forward to get off the hill, but started sliding backwards. I was facing uphill. Anyway quick j turn and i floored it downhill. Bus ate a snow bank to a slow stop. If i kept sliding back he would have just pushed me into the bank then buried me in it.

And you are right greg, those guys high revin v8s are a real head scratcher the first time you hear em wind up.

The car I most wish I still had was my 1966 Fairlane XL Convertible, Burnt orange exterior and matching bucket interior with 289 hipo, 4 speed with Hurst shifter and console, 370 gears and Detroit locker! When I sod it it had 176,000 miles on it and only had a valve job,  a clutch and 3 brake jobs on it! Had more fun with that car than any since!

yup +2 on Marks that is a good show been there a few times.
I'm working on a 67 chevelle custom deluxe 300. we put a 67 283 with a powerglide that I had in the shed in it the end of fall. just waiting for the weather to break so we can get back after it. once its closer to being road worthy it'll be hitting the shows. ugly as hell but I'll be damn proud to  be driving it.
