Thinking about building a 7.62x39 AR
« on: February 19, 2012, 10:23:09 AM »
Im looking at piston uppers from PWS or Black Rifle Systems. Besides the cool factor, the ammunition is cheaper and I would be able to deer hunt with it. Im probably going to put it on a pre-ban lower. I currently have a stag model 8 that I can't say enough good things about. Any experience or input would be great.

PWS make very good stuff- Customer service is also top notch. You will not be disappoint with PWS- No experience with Black rifle systems.

My opinion - stick with a 5.56, and grab some 75gr TAP or 70gr TSX if you want to hunt deer.  Of all of the big Pennsylvania deer I've shot, most fell to well-placed sub 100gr bullets.  They ain't water buffalo.

The biggest problem with 7.62x39 ARs is that the magazines suck.  All of them.  The blasting ammunition is in the same price range too for both calibers.

Unfortunately we can't hunt deer with anything less than a .243

That, and if you're on state land, forget it. Have to find private land to hunt with a rifle.

If your goal really is to hunt, just build an AR for fun/SHTF purposes, and keep a 12ga. w/rifled slug barrel around. Modern 12ga. sabots are capable of some pretty impressive ballistics & very good accuracy.
Sometimes you just have to Cowboy Up.

Forgot about that - I never hunted deer in CT.

Still, 7.62x39 ARs are yucky.  Consider 6.8?

Customer showed me a pic of a deer he bagged with one of our VZ2008s.  Soft point 7.62x39, and with iron sights.

I agree, if deer hunting with an AR in CT, go for 6.8 instead of 7.62x39.  It will be more expensive, but less finicky.

I currently have an AR for fun. I've thought about the 6.8 round/upper, but ammo isn't really available and in a shtf situation it will be worthless. I have a shotgun with a slug barrel. I do have options as far as private land to hunt on. :) Does anyone know if the new asc mags have fixed the mag issues people were having? Reviews seem to be good.

What's worse, a 7.62x39 upper with marginal reliability but cheap ammo or a 6.8 upper that works for hunting, but there's no cheap ammo for it?

I've shot quite a few deer before I decided that hunting deer was boring and that hunting predators was more fun.  Deer hunting is not something that requires a ton of ammunition.  After zeroing the upper & optic, you might go through what, 10 boxes of ammunition in your lifetime?  For most hunters a lot less... more like 1-3 boxes.  Buy the 6.8 upper and a good optic, use it for hunting, and use the 5.56 upper for defensive purposes.

I have 8 older CP mags before the ASC "buyout" It true the mags were not reliable for me...however after changing out the springs with wolff extra power AK springs about a year + ago, and loading the mags with 25 rounds ( i haven't tried loading with full 30 rounders since spring replacement)....After the spring replacement the mags have all been 99.5% GTG for about 1500 FMJ rds- From what i have reading the ASC mag supposedly are better then the older CP mags. Your YMMV- some say their CP or ASC mags are out of the box reliable.

If you want a toy go for it. I like the 7.62x39 and have used one for deer for awhile now (sks and bolt).   I'm dumping all my 7.62x39. Sticking with 5.56 and 308.

Ain't that something you can legally hunt deer with a 25acp rifle but not a 223.

I don't hunt animals for fun. Strictly a freezer filler. But id shoot any animal around here with a tsx bullet in 5.56.

Know your anatomy. Know your point of impact. I don't think you can go wrong.
