The AR-15 Pistol Build!
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:44:37 AM »
This project only came to be after inspiration from yours truly, NVISN!  8)

Alot of you have already seen my "53-202a" discussion thread so I won't through that whole thing again. I will repost the E-mail I received back from Sgt. William B. Krauss #256.

Quote
Mr. H*****k:
In response to your question concerning the construction of an AR-15 type pistol my office is unable to provide legal advice or interpretation regarding state statutes. You are correct in that Connecticut General Statute 53-202a(a)(B) requires that a pistol must have a detachable magazine to be considered an assault weapon. If you permanently removed the ability of the firearm to accept a detachable magazine it would no longer have the foundation characteristics required in the statute. As a word of caution I would suggest that there is no question that the magazine is permanently attached once your firearm has been constructed.

If you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

Translation: By removing the "abilty to accept a dettachable magazine" eliminates it from the AWB!

This is my resolutioin to this issue of permanetly attaching the magazine.
Started off trying to find a good location to make the mag release button in-operable. After tossing around many ideas on how to go about this I came to a conclusion. Easier for me to explain in the photos than it is to type it,lol.

After completion, I did a function check and everything functions correctly.
By doing this modification it allows me to have all of the evil features. :twisted:

As seen in the last pic, Split the halves and load from the top. Going to be modifying a stripper clip guide to work with this setup. So I can load 10 rounds at a time off of stripper clips.

I was thinking about doing a CT legal Ruger Charger myself. But don't they have CT legal AR-15 pistols? Just as long as its under 50oz its a go or am I mistaken? The PLR22 is legal in CT.

Never looked into seeing if any companies made CT legal pistols, so I am unsure. If the pistol has the ability to accept a dettachable magazine then yes, 53-202a has to be followed to the T!

"(B) A semiautomatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following:
(i) An ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;
(ii) A threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip or silencer;
(iii) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned;
(iv) A manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and
(v) A semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm;"

The PLR-22 is legal only after having a muzzle brake or thread cover pinned or welded on.  Then it barely squeaks under the weight limit.  A handguard is considered part of the gun, and when installed, adds both to the weight penalty as well as to the 'barrel shroud allowing off-hand grip without burning one's fingers' restriction nonsense.  We've sold a few of those at the shows.  They're lots of fun at the range, and capable of surprisingly good accuracy.  And like the Charger, it can actually make good use of a compact bipod when shooting from the bench with a scope.

This is one of those situations where the only real achievement I can see is that the OP successfully worked within the law.  The usefulness of the gun is completely minimized since the user now has to pop open the upper/lower and stuff cartridges directly into the magazine... sort of like loading an SKS.

If the OP is happy, I guess that's fine.  I think a post-ban SBR with a 12" OAL barrel would be a shit ton more useful.

Useful in what? Putting holes in paper? Playing Rambo in the back yard? lol
Plus, you have a $200 tax stamp and months of waiting.I'm not going to war with this gun. So not having a dettachable magazine makes no difference to me, since all I do is put holes in paper anyway.
 It was built for the simple fact that these, in CT, in this pistol configuration are practically never seen or done. So this will do the exact same thing that any other firearm I own and many other peoples firearms do and thats putting holes in paper.
Can't wait to see the fireballs coming outta this baby!  8)

rgaper- not trying to sound like a d*ck, just giving my perspective on this build. Oh and to be a big F U to the state!  :)
