bcm Barrels
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:51:08 AM »
Was just wondering what you guys recommend I am thinking of getting a bcm upper:

cold hammer forged or regular barrel not sure if its worth the little bit extra for the hammer forged?

Would you go with a govt or lightweight barrel?

I have a standard lightweight 14.5" middy and really like it.

After reading a lot of posts on BCM BFH barrels, I still don't know how much difference there really is.  Also, from what I read, it sounds like one would need to spend several times the value of a very nice rifle in ammo to ever be able to tell if the extra ~$80 was worth it.  I don't shoot that much, so I couldn't justify the extra cash.

I am 5'7" and picky about how guns feel.  I wanted the balance of the rifle as far to the rear as possible, so I went with a LW barrel.  It felt great until I loaded it down with a VFG, light and mount.  Ultimately, the LW weighs only a few ounces less (something like 2-3oz).

By chance are you running this on a preban lower or did you have a muzzle brake installed? If muzzle brake which one?

I've got a 14.5" hammer forged with a PWS FSC556 installed (pinned/welded) on a Spikes lower (pinned stock) it's a great barrel/upper. Regardless of which BCM product(s) you choose, you've made a very respectable choice.

I'm only 5'10'', and I like all of my guns muzzle heavy. If I keep the stock tucked firmly in the pocket of my shoulder, the muzzle drops right where I want it. I can't shoot ultralight 16'' pencil barreled AR's worth crap, but bull barreled AR's just point easier for me.

I had a Battlecomp 1.5 pinned by Doug at Delta Arsenal (he did an excellent job).  I run it on a post-ban at the moment.

I really like it and don't intend to go back to any of the louder brakes unless they are intended to be a mount for a suppressor.  I understand the PWS FSC556 and TTO, among others, do a better job reducing recoil and muzzle rise, but they are all far more obnoxious for the shooter and range buddies.

Yeah, the FSC556 is great for muzzle rise, not so great for the noise factor  :)

I have both if you want to shoot them to compare weight etc etc. I'll actually be at High Rock on Sat morning letting another forum member shoot my M&P fs 45. If you want to meet me as well, I'll bring them. Just let me know.

I personally prefer the hammer forged barrel because it's more robust and can handle getting bang around more than the lightweight setup. I'm sure it will last longer too.

if I was in the market for a new upper id get a hammer forged and lightweight profile.

Why?  Everything I've read and from a few people in the industry say its better. I try to buy the best I can afford IF it does worth the extra cash.  I believe its a better barrel on many different factors.

Why lightweight? Cause lighter is better, anything that weighs less and does the same thing is a better choice to me.

Do I have a chf barrel now?  No. I'm pretty happy with my M4 upper.

I do have a lightweight 20in upper that I love.

I've got  a 16" midlength standard bbl. BCM upper W/ a Battlecomp 1.0 on it and Midwest 9" rails. I like it but am assembling a 14.5' DD midlenght lightweight HF upper w/ Magpul forend with a BC 1.5 for comparison. I'll post some comments after trying them side by side. Would I spend the $80+- for a HF bbl.? Probably not, I just don't have the $ to expend the 10's of thousands of rounds that would produce any additional wear. Is a BF bbl. more accurate? Could be but in doubt I'm able to live up to the  fractional difference it might produce. Look at it this way $80 is 1/6 of the cost of  a Falla weekend, I need the training more than I need whatever additional bbl. life or fractional accuracy increase I might get.
