Ar15 compensators/brakes thread. Chime in guys & gals.
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:19:10 PM »
This is what I've had experience with :
Rainier XTC Comp - Very little muzzlerise - loud - no clue about flash.
PWS FSC556 - Very little muzzlerise - loud - huge fireballs. :)
Levang Linear - normal muzzlerise/extra recoil - quiet - no clue about flash.
Miculek type comps - Little less than normal muzzlerise - LOUD LOUD LOUD - no clue about flash.
YHM Phantom comp - little muzzlerise - LOUD - no clue about flash.

I am wondering about these : (And any others I can't think of right now)

I think the PWS has less flash than a standard A2 Flash hider, how it compares to other comps (vs flash hiders) I'd have to try out myself.

Stag and Colt comps are loud and don't do a lot for muzzle rise.
Jojo's Comp is loud yet holds the muzzle down.
My favorite is Ops Inc, Quiet and effective.

No, if it did it wouldn't be classified as a brake.

Too me all guns are loud, breaks are loud. I don't notice sound from a shooter pov that much.
I do notice muzzle blast.

I have a couple of rifles with JoJos a2 break. I like it. Not overly blasty. Keeps the dust down.

I also have a couple of breaks that bushmaster made. Ak74 style. Screw on.  Very blasty.  Doesn't kick up much dirt unless you shoot sideways. But then if you do. Man O Man! It will bore a hole in the ground like your drilling a well.  I took them off went with the A2.

Also had a Smith Vcomp a while back. Worked.

For my money Ill stick with JoJos.

I plan on having this put on my rifle when I get around to buying one and driving to JoJo's.  Currently I have the YHM Phantom Comp, while cool looking, it is really loud.
Also if you use "Bryanfreakinrocks " as a coupon code at AIMsurplus.com.  You can get the BC 2.0 for around $140 I believe, compared to the $150+ price tag they show.

I heard the battlecomps are good, but I just refuse to pay $150+- for a tiny piece of metal that costs about $3 in materials and takes less than 5 minutes of CNC time to manufacture.

While I can agree with that, I'd also like to say that I've run CNC's before, and let me tell you... there's a LOT of setup involved even if you're making a huge batch of parts. Rehoming & indexing take valuable time. On top of that, covering the cost of the CNC's & the guys to babysit them makes up a huge portion of the cost (Hell, some of the entry level CNC's like the ones we had at the shop cost only $30,000...)

I agree that it is a little expensive, IMHO.

I used to program CNCs at my dads shop. Hw has 6 big ones that cost about a small home each. The program might take 30 mins , setup of tools maybe another 30 if ure taking your time, but the process on a 3-4axis would be about4-5 minutes at slow feed.

Heck I might just see if he s not too busy and let me make my own. LOL.

I think the PWS has less flash than a standard A2 Flash hider

No, if it did it wouldn't be classified as a brake.

No, a brake has to direct muzzle gasses it has nothing to do with how it hides or doesn't hide a muzzle flash for a classification. In fact the PWS is classified a brake and it is a more effective flash hider than a A2.

The FSC556 is not classified as a flash suppressor.  ATF letter to PWS below:

Do you have any video or pictures comparing the two?  I've never heard anyone make that claim, and I did a lot of reading on brakes before buying one.
