In a nutshell, I will eventually be looking to purchase some sort of Kalashnikov-type rifle (yes, I know VZs only resemble them

). In a perfect world, getting one of some sort in 7.62x39 would probably be ideal for me, mostly because an SKS will also be in my future at some point, and splitting ammo between the two would be nice. This isn't an absolute though, and I do appreciate the 5.45 round. However...
All I know is that there's so many variants, countries of manufacture, importers, and so on that it's making my head spin. AKMs, AK74s, Tantals, VZs, Galil Golanis, Saigas......christ almighty.

Please give me the low-down on AK-type rifles, the good, the bad, the ugly, what to avoid, what HAS to be avoided in terms of legality, etc.
Also, I am not into the tactical-look AKs. At all. I want an AK to look like an AK...no scopes, no rails, no black plastic this & that, just wood and steel. If that means doing some work to achieve that look, so be it.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
