washing machine + bullets = ?
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:32:46 PM »
While usually a stickler for clearing out pockets before laundry (hate it when tissues go EVERYWHERE) I missed a couple rounds of 9mm and they came out nice & shiny. I am assuming I can these without issue, just wanted to get a pulse check from the interwebs prior to doing anything stupid(er).

Thanks yo,
E

I have had hit or miss luck with rounds that have run through the washer and dryer.  Some have gone off, some fail to fire, some get lost and are hanging out with lone socks.

I checked with mrs techie.  She said you are fine as long as the target is also clean and shiny.  I was also advised never to leave live ammunition on my dirty laundry.  Mrs techie is a good shot.  :)

Seriously... 9mm is 12 bucks a box.  Is it worth it?  Think squib load or hangfire.  Mrs techie wouldn't shoot them either.

If it were commercial 9mm, I wouldn't bother.  If it was milsurp subgun ammo with the red sealant around the primers and case neck, I'd shoot them.   :)

I've shot lots of ammo that has been in water and never had a problem with it. Water will not destroy primers or powder, even if it somehow manages to get in the case, which is highly unlikely. That idea is left over from black powder days.

I was more worried about the banging around in hot soapy water compromising the seal and producing a squib that leaves a bullet partway down the barrel.  Perhaps excessive caution.  :)

That's why I say "is it worth it".  Saving 75 cents worth of ammo isn't worth clearing a squib OR hearing mrs techie yell about it.  :)

Take them to the range or wherever and pop them off. Bring your squib rod with you and if they fire, they're over and done with. if they don't fire at all, throw them in the dud bucket and move on or take them home and break them down for reloading. If they do misfire and don't clear the barrel, knock them out and be done with it.
At the very least, just cull them into the dud bucket and figure the forty cents isn't enough to worry about.

Hmm...

Generally speaking, any ammunition that I've dropped from a significant distance, or plunked into water is no longer considered 110% reliable by my standards.

They may work, they may not. Try them out at the range, and bring a brass rod to tap them out with should you get a squib. Would I put them in a carry gun? Absolutely not.

Thats how i get the finger prints and dna off em, lol

I just toss em in the training pile, when i use that ammo it is mixed manuf/condition so jams, ftf etc are expected and welcome. It all usually goes bang though.

Anything's possible, but I've never seen a confirmed incident of it happening. As I said previously, water has no effect upon powder. Put some powder in a cup of water, leave it there a couple of days, then dump it on the ground and drop a match on it. Be prepared for the flash as the powder burns. Smokeless powder does not absorb water.
