What part of the cartridge is actually corrosive?

The primer.

The primer.  It contains salts.  Needless to say, salt and steel don't quite agree with each other.  Specially in damp environments.

Just wash it off by pouring water or windex down the chamber after a shooting and then clean as normal.  It's not going to eat your barrel in seconds.  Just don't leave it unwashed for weeks in the damp.

Agreed. I'm sure any one of the collectors on the forms have had their fair share of shooting corrosive ammo and not cleaning thoroughly. What usually results is a rusty barrel and it can be a pain to clean.

#9 Hoppes does the trick too!
Ar15's don't jam, you just don't clean your gun!

You need to make sure you get Nitro Hoppes No9 if you don't it doesn't clean corrosive ammo. If you notice the regular bottle doesn't say corrosive primers and the Nitro does on outside of bottle check outside of bottle before you use it I made mistake the one they sell at Walmart doesn't have corrosive primers on bottle but one they have at Cabelas says corrosive primers on bottle
