American eagle
« on: December 03, 2011, 07:26:17 PM »
I just purchased a walther PPS .40 the other day.  So I take it to the range today and fire off a few rounds of the American eagle ammo that the seller gave me. I look down range, aim, squeeze the trigger and all that happened was a little fizzle from the round. It never fired. I waited 10 seconds before pulling it out of the chamber and inspecting. You could clearly see that the round was struck by the firing pin and the powder ignited but did not fire. Has anyone had this issue? Does this happen a lot?

Jon,

At times, ALL ammo makers can have a few duds that get through for some reason or another. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to touch off a round of factory ammo & get a similar sizzle, but with no effect (other than getting a projectile lodged 2'' down the bore.  >:(  ).

Doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen. It's frustrating as hell too!!!

Just got back from BSR put 200 rounds of AE through my G26 no hiccups at all. Also ran 200 rounds of PMC Bronze without a glitch. The AE's punch(little that it is) caught me off guard after running through the PMC's first.

Edit: Shot a 33 round clip(first time) as fast as my finger could safely pull the trigger. And boy for a 9mm I almost fell back and had to step back into a weaver to catch my balance LOL

They had a recall on some 45 at the beginning of the year.

In your case though, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's practice ammo anyway.

Here is a great deal on carry ammo for that PPS:

It could of been a bad lot of ammo, and I would give equal consideration to the way the ammo was stored, any way whenever ya have a squib, make sure you check the barrel for an obstruction.
I was doing RSO duty one day, and heard a guy with a squib, I watched as he racked the slide, cleared the empty brass, and chambered a new round. I try not to be the too much fun police on the range, but I got involved real quick when I saw that slide close again. Sure enough the bullet was stuck about half way down the barrel, with someone I know that shoulda known better than to proceed after that kinda malfunction.
A momentary lapse of reason, and an almost bad day. Remember anyone can call a ceasefire and better to err on the side of caution.

Just wondering Gregg, I have been shooting for over 40 years and have never had a hangfire or squib load, and you are only 19 and it happens a lot!?  :o

Had a couple boxes of Federal Champion with squibs. Same with shotgun shells.

Must be my bad luck. I've had .22's squib on me a multitude of times. Same with 9x19 (when I had my HP995).

Greg, how are you storing that ammo?  Or did you buy a big lot of 50yo mixed caliber ammo that's been stored in a damp basement from an estate sale?
