7.7 Jap ammo.
« on: November 19, 2011, 05:58:00 PM »
Does anyone know where to get 7.7 Jap for something a bit cheaper than $1.50 a round? I don't reload, unfortunately, so i need to buy it.  :(
If anyone could help me out it would be really appreciated. Does anyone reload 7.7 Jap here?

You might have to reload. I did some searching and the cheapest I could find was $1.74 a round. Most places that advertised it didn't even have it in stock. Good luck on the search hope you find some.

According to "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversion", you can form 7.7 Jap from .30-06 casings with a set of loading dies and a case trimmer.  Once you have casings, loading should be fairly straightforward.  Bullets .311" for the .303 Brit or 7.62X54R would work best, but you could probably make do with regular .308 caliber bullets if you only need recreational ammo.

The Guide lists a 150 grain load using 43.0 grains of IMR4064.  I'm sure there's a lot more info available in loading manuals or on-line.

Hansens in Southport had some ww2 dated ammo and also a box or two of modern 7.7 the last time I was there. I would call first though.

Just be aware that much of Hansen's Jap ammo inventory is for machine gun, hence it is semi-rimmed brass; not suited for your Type 99 rifle.

Sometime ago, Hoffman's had several hundred pieces of Prvi Partizan brass in 7.7 jap, but I can't swear it's still there. Call and find out and we can talk about breweing up some ammo. Please note, I don't reload this caliber currently, so you'll have to make it worth my while in order for me to buy the dies and such. Basically, any bullet used in the 303 Brit is suitable for the Jap (ie. .311"). (860)961-8931

Also, I have several moulds that drop bullets that can be sized suitably for the 7.7 Jap. My understanding is that the Jap receivers were almost indestructable (sans the "last-ditch" models perhaps), but that doesn't mean you always have to shoot full-tilt loads. If you can tolerate lighter recoiling, economy loads, you should be able to enjoy hundreds of rounds per session at modest cost, namely under 60 cents a pop.
There are many less-than-standard-profile-for-this-caliber bullet choices that can still work (for example the 115g Lyman 311008 - typically used in the .32-20). I've used this in .308 Win., 30 Carbine, 7.5 Swiss, 303 Brit, 30-30 etc. Just size them to suit and chamber the first loads gingerly to see how well they cycle.... and if okay..you're gtg! Fear not, I have a gas-checked 200 grainer that fairly well mirrors the standard FMJ bullet, too.

Sorry to go off topic but... I'm going straight to CTSixShot to learn to reload when I've got money to invest in it.

With current circumstances (on my end), you might want to wait for warmer weather!
...but, you are welcome to join in otherwise...

Thanks for the info CTSixShot! I might just get myself a single stage press and some materials and convert 30-06 brass to 7.7. I already shoot 30-06 so now i can save the brass more often.

Just watch for too much lube accumulating around the neck and shoulder which might cause denting on the brass (it will shoot out in most cases).
Good luck and enjoy the Jap.

If you are going to do case reforming, do yourself a favor and buy a GOOD press in the first place - RCBS RockChucker or the equivalent from Hornady or Lyman.
